Lewandowski seeking new personal best to reach knockout stag

Postby FCBayernNews » Tue Jun 22, 2021 12:30 pm

Robert Lewandowski’s goal in the 1-1 draw against Spain earned him yet another place in the history of Polish football. He was already the country’s most capped player (121) and all-time top scorer (67 goals), but now he’s also the first person from Poland to score in three consecutive European Championship finals. He’d previously got on the scoresheet at Euro 2012 and 2016 before repeating the feat once again this year. He can now set a new personal record at a finals in the final group game against Sweden on Wednesday (6pm CEST).

The Bayern striker has never before scored two goals at the Euros, and another goal couldn’t come at a more opportune moment for the Eagles, as they require a win against Sweden in St. Petersburg to have a chance of reaching the last 16. Captain Lewandowski and his men have just one point on the board from the first two games. The Swedes currently lead Group E on four points, ahead of Slovakia (3) and Spain (2).

Those performances mean Lewandowski views the Scandinavians with great respect. “We won’t be the favourites. Sweden have very good players and it’ll be a very tough game,” the 32-year-old told uefa.com. “But we’ll be prepared. The game against Spain definitely gave us a lot.“ Lewandowski’s goal looks to have taken the weight off him and he looks to try and reach the knockout stage of the Euros. Five years ago, he made it to the quarter-finals.
