Lahm predicts rosy future for Bayern

Postby FCBayernNews » Wed Jan 04, 2012 6:30 pm

Bayern's schedule at the winter training camp on Wednesday again included two workouts, at 10 am and 4.30 pm, with work on the ball providing the main focus. Despite the intense fitness training of the previous day, the stars were in terrific form, with every player up to full speed and no-one shirking a tackle. "There's real commitment. We're showing how hungry we are for trophies," Philipp Lahm commented.

"Even in the practice matches, no-one wants to lose," the club captain continued, "everyone's giving it 100 percent." Naturally, that is a precondition for FCB's pursuit of the Bundesliga, DFB Cup and Champions League in the second half of the campaign. The latter in particular is a truly huge challenge, Lahm acknowledged: "If we're to meet our own expectations, we have to minimise our periods of weakness. Four Bundesliga defeats before Christmas isn't something any of us wanted."

Mario Gomez, the Bundesliga's top scorer with 16 goals so far, agreed with his team-mate. "We can improve in many areas," the striker insisted, recalling a couple of games in which the men in red were clearly in command, only to lose the plot suddenly and without any obvious explanation. "That can't be happening to us. It's not what a top team does," Gomez declared.

The week in Doha is dedicated to eradicating problems such as that, as the coaching staff aim for an even more successful second half to the campaign, topping even the convincing first phase. "We have so much quality in the team. We can look forward to a rosy future," Lahm ventured, "we need to keep picking up experience, so we become genuine Champions League contenders at some point. And none of us would object if it was to be this season."

Fine-tuning the system

"In another three or four years, almost all of us will be the perfect age for a footballer," the club captain pointed out, "we could go on to achieve a lot over a period of years." One decisive factor is the adoption of a proven and successful formation and tactics. Louis van Gaal set the process in motion, "and Jupp Heynckes has fine-tuned every aspect of that," said Lahm, "the players have taken the FC Bayern way to heart."

Gomez spoke of a "well-balanced group" with tremendous potential for the future. "We know each other very well, and it's all working. The spine of this team will stay the same for many years." Mario has every intention of being part of that spine, and in his current form, he is an automatic choice for the starting line-up. "My current strike rate won't be easy to maintain," he concluded, "but it's what I want, and it's my target."
