Klose ruled out of Hannover clash

Miroslav Klose is out of Bayern’s Bundesliga meeting with Hannover 96 on Saturday after an MRI scan on Monday confirmed club chief medic Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfarth’s weekend diagnosis of strained knee ligaments.

Klose has been ordered not to run or train with the squad for the next ten days, working out instead in the pool and the weights room. Müller-Wohlfahrt will take a decision on the striker’s return to the team training programme after a follow-up examination in the middle of next week.

Taken out by Naldo

José Ernesto Sosa will also miss the league leaders’ home meeting with Hannover 96. The Argentine newcomer suffered an attack of lumbago, and has been told to rest for the next eight to ten days to allow the problem to clear naturally.

The midfielder broke down with back pain in the warm-up prior to the meeting with Werder Bremen and did not feature in the match. Klose was on the receiving end of a roughhouse challenge by home defender Naldo after just 126 seconds of play and was unable to continue after half-time.

Toni as last striker standing

Klose’s misfortune means the selection problems in attack have once again become acute, with Luca Toni the only fully-fit recognised striker at the club. Jan Schlaudraff faces several further weeks in rehab training following back surgery, while Lukas Podolski made his first competitive appearance for four months in a run-out with the third division reserves last weekend.

“Obviously I lack stamina, freshness and match practice, but I’ll remedy that over the next few weeks,“ the 22-year-old explained. Coach Ottmar Hitzfeld intends to monitor the Germany man’s progress in training this week before potentially handing him a seat on the bench against Hannover: “He needs match practice,“ Hitzfeld confirmed.

Lucio expected to be fit

There was better news of Lucio, after an MRI scan on Monday confirmed the Brazil defender had sustained nothing more serious than bruising to his calf and should be fit in time for Saturday. The same applies to Daniel van Buyten, who was obliged to pull out of the Belgium squad to face Serbia in a Euro 2008 qualifier with a foot injury.
