Klose & Co make semis at Micho's expense

Postby FCBayernNews » Sat Jul 03, 2010 10:30 pm

Germany hit a new high at the World Cup in South Africa with a 4-1 demolition job on joint trophy favourites Argentina, earning Joachim Löw's men a semi-final meeting with Spain. Miroslav Klose struck a brace in his 100th international appearance, with Thomas Müller and Arne Friedrich also on target in front of a 64,100 crowd in Cape Town. The result means FCB man Martin Demichelis is on his way home.

"What's happened today is obviously just unbelievable. After you've played Argentina off the park and beaten them 4-0, you're basically speechless," said Müller, whose third-minute goal set Germany on their way to a famous victory. The shooting star and Klose are now both on four goals for the tournament. "The star today was definitely the team, yet again. We're all playing at the limit," enthused Müller, although the youngster collected a second booking and will now miss the last four clash.

Only Ronaldo ahead of Klose

That was the only blemish on an otherwise stunning afternoon for the Germans. Klose took his total at World Cup finals to 14, level with legend Gerd Müller. Only former Brazil ace Ronaldo (15) has now scored more at the tournament. "Looking at the way we stood our ground and fought again today, just like we did against England, I only have one thing to say: respect," said Klose, "I'm proud of this team, and also the team behind the team - every man in this squad is sensational. I'm delighted we've hit the target we set ourselves before the tournament. Everything else now is a bonus."

Bastian Schweinsteiger was rightly named Man of the Match after supplying two assists, neutralising the perceived threat posed by Argentina star Lionel Messi, and orchestrating Germany's play from midfield. "We've played exceptionally well today, and I'm really proud of this team," the FCB youth product commented afterwards, "we have the potential to go far We're not particularly experienced, but we have a lot of players who have no inhibitions and are prepared to try things."

Micho off on holiday

Germany captain Philipp Lahm said the result was "unbelievable. We restricted them to very few chances, and there's a huge amount of attacking quality in this team." He and his men are now looking to take the next step. "All the teams in the semi-finals have what it takes to make the final and win the World Cup," said Lahm.

By contrast, Demichelis now has a three-week holiday in which to recover from his disappointment. He will rejoin the Bayern squad after the club's Trentino training camp (19-24 July) to begin preparing for the new Bundesliga and European season.
