There’s good news on Oliver Kahn. While his team-mates were in Lisbon on Wednesday preparing for their UEFA Cup match against Belenenses, the captain was undergoing a successful operation on his injured right elbow by specialists from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Bayern’s club doctor Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt heard the news in Lisbon during a telephone call with the surgeon in charge immediately after the operation. Kahn will now spend the weekend in the United States and begin his rehabilitation physiotherapy there. He is expected back in Munich at the beginning of next week.

Kahn has been complaining of a painful problem with his elbow for some time, culminating in his withdrawal at the last moment from last weekend’s match in Leverkusen. Following the operation to remove loose connective tissue from his elbow, Bayern’s medical staff expect the 38-year-old goalkeeper to be on the sidelines for four to five weeks.

During this period Kahn’s designated successor Michael Rensing will keep goal for Bayern with Bernd Dreher as his deputy. “I am pleased to get the chance to be in the team for several matches in a row,” Rensing said before the match in Portugal. “I see this as good experience for the coming season.” Once Kahn brings his career to an end next summer, Rensing will finally become first choice between the posts.
