Kahn ruled out of St Pauli Cup clash

Bayern will be without captain Oliver Kahn when they journey to face third division St Pauli in the DFB German Cup first round proper on Saturday evening. The 37-year-old goalkeeper has been handed a one-match suspension in the knockout competition by a German Football Association (DFB) disciplinary tribunal and must pay a €5,000 fine after a review of the evidence from last season's Cup final at the Berlin Olympic Stadium on 29 April. Kahn is alleged to have engaged in unsportsmanlike behaviour towards the Eintracht Frankfurt fans.

Munich defeated outsiders Eintracht 1-0 to collect a 13th German Cup triumph and lay the foundation for their second domestic double in succession. Following Claudio Pizarro's opening goal, Kahn preserved Bayern's lead with a stunning reflex save from Ioannis Amanatidis three minutes from time. That provoked a chorus of insults from the Frankfurt fans, with the Bayern captain alleged to have unleashed a swearword at the Eintracht supporters in response.

Rensing to step in

"It's ridiculous to say I insulted the fans," Kahn told weekly magazine kicker, although both the player and his club have decided not to appeal against the verdict. Michael Rensing will deputise in goal when the holders travel to Hamburg at the weekend. Kahn's designated successor has proved a lucky omen when he has stepped in for the number one goalkeeper in the past: Bayern have yet to lose a competitive match with Rensing between the sticks.

That's ok. Rensing will get his experience and help him develop. We can win with or without Kahn...
