Kahn out of Milan trip with suspension

Postby FCBayernNews » Thu Mar 22, 2007 7:10 pm

Oliver Kahn is set to miss Bayern's Champions League quarter-final first leg trip to AC Milan on 3 April after UEFA handed the club captain a one-match ban on Thursday.

Meeting at the European governing body's headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Committee found Kahn guilty of "improper conduct" at the post-match doping control after the Champions League Round of 16 return leg against Real Madrid in Munich on 7 March.

Fines for both Bayern men

As well as the suspension for one club competition match, the UEFA Committee also fined the goalkeeper 20,000 Swiss francs. Kahn had previously issued an apology to the doctor in charge of the doping control.

Fellow Bayern man Lucio, who was also accused of "breaching basic rules of good conduct" at the same doping control, escaped a ban but was ordered to pay a 10,000 Swiss franc fine.

Hitzfeld hoped for leniency

Earlier in the day, Munich head coach Ottmar Hitzfeld had been hoping for a more favourable verdict. "I'm assuming neither of them will be banned. My guess is they'll both be fined," the 59-year-old declared.

Club captain Kahn and the Bayern board of directors will meet on Friday to discuss the verdict and any potential appeal. Under UEFA rules, appeals may be lodged within three days of the club and player receiving written grounds for the verdicts.

Kahn's stand-in for the clash in Milan is almost certain to be his designated successor Michael Rensing. The former Germany U-21 keeper has already faced the northern Italians in the Champions League after deputising for the captain in last season's 1-1 last sixteen draw at the Allianz Arena.

Van Bommel also missing

The Bavarians are also without Mark van Bommel for the quarter-final first leg as the midfielder serves an automatic one-match suspension for collecting two yellow cards in the Real clash on 7 March. UEFA initially increased the ban to cover the return in Munich, activating a deferred one-match suspension imposed on the Dutchman following an incident in Madrid, but the sentence was halved on appeal in midweek.
