Four weeks after wrapping up the Japanese championship, Urawa Red Diamonds have sealed a domestic double after claiming the Emperor's Cup on New Year's Day. Bayern's Japanese partner club defeated league runners-up Gamba Osaka 1-0 in the Final to retain the trophy they captured last term. Yuichiro Nagai fired the only goal of the game three minutes from time.

"I'm over the moon," Urawa head coach Guido Buchwald confessed after his last match in charge in Japan. "I can't imagine a better way to say farewell," the1990 World Cup winner declared following the final whistle at the Tokyo Olympic stadium. Buchwald is returning to Germany after three successful seasons at the Red Diamonds helm, where he will be followed by Holger Osieck, Franz Beckenbauer's assistant when the Bayern President coached Germany to the 1990 world crown.

Three trophies for Buchwald

Buchwald described the championship title as "the crowning glory" in his last season with Urawa Reds, who he also represented as a player. Buchwald and his assistant Gert Engels guided Red Diamonds to the championship once, finished runners-up on two occasions, and claimed the Emperor's Cup twice. The German pair thus rate as the most successful foreign coaching team since the foundation of the Japanese professional league in 1993.

Buchwald, named "Coach of the Year" in Japan shortly before Christmas, said he was simply happy at having worked hard and successfully in what had become his second home. The former world-class centre-half was seen to shed a tear or two even as his team gleefully celebrated their double triumph after the New Year's Day final.
