‘I don’t need to push myself any harder’

The wait is nearly over. Joshua Kimmich is set to play his first game in the World Cup finals at Moscow’s Luschniki Stadium on Sunday (17.00 CEST). “It’s a dream come true,” said the 23-year-old in voicing his excitement at Friday’s press conference. The FCB full back is fully motivated ahead of the game against Mexico.

‘I don’t need to push myself any harder,” declared Kimmich, “anticipation is growing more and more and we’ll all be happy when we finally get going.” The player with 29 full international caps is making his World Cup finals debut against a team he’s already faced.

At the 2017 Confed Cup, also held in Russia, Germany met Mexico in the semi-finals. “We got off to a good start. But they played better and more possesion than us. We took advantage of their mistakes,” said the FCB defender in recalling the 4-1 win. As in that game, Kimmich will probably play on the right flank on Sunday and “give 100 per cent. I want to perform well in every game. Not for me but for the team. We want to start well, win the game and then see what happens.” May the dream last as long as possible.
