'I'd happily play in the Champions League again'

Postby FCBayernNews » Thu Dec 15, 2011 7:20 pm

Michael Rensing kept goal for Bayern in 53 Bundesliga matches, 15 European fixtures, and 13 DFB Cup ties, generally at the Allianz Arena. On Friday, he returns to his former home ground as a visiting player for the first time. FCB journal Bayern Magazin spoke to the 27-year-old about his feelings and expectations prior to FC Köln's visit to his club of a decade - and Rensing also revealed one major goal he still wishes to fulfil.

Interview: Michael Rensing

Bayern Magazin: Hello Michael, any concern that you might report to the wrong dressing room on Friday?
Michael Rensing: If I try, I'm sure the stewards will send me to the left rather than the right (laughs).

It's the first time you'll be returning to the Allianz Arena as a visiting player. Is it a special occasion for you?
Yes! It'll be odd, but a very special feeling to run out in my former stadium. It's only my second meeting with the club where I spent ten years, and where I had plenty of emotional experiences. I'm also looking forward to appearing in front of my former fans.

Do you maintain contact with your former team-mates and friends from Munich?
Yes, I keep in touch with a few former colleagues by phone and e-mail.

You've been in Cologne for nearly a year now. How would you assess the time so far? Has it been a good move for you?
I feel very much at home in Cologne. I was in the position where I didn't have a club for six months, so I was extremely pleased when FC Köln signed me. I'm very satisfied here.

The target at FCB every season is the league title, but the more modest goal in Cologne is simply to preserve your top-flight status. How did you adapt to the change?
Actually, it's not only about avoiding relegation. Our goal is to finish better than tenth.

Your first clash with FCB in Cologne colours was an extraordinary affair. You were 2-0 behind at half-time and heading for defeat, but ended up winning 3-2 in an amazing turnaround. Furthermore, the last two matches between the sides in Munich ended goalless. What are you expecting this Friday?
I hope we can keep a clean sheet for as long as possible. The important thing for us is to build up our confidence during the match. If we can do that, we may be capable of taking something from the game.

Now you've been away for a while, how would you assess your time in Munich, during which you won the double on four occasions? What did you learn that has helped you with the rest of your career?
I had a wonderful time, which has shaped me as a person and a player. I joined Bayern when I was 16, I was a boarder at the Academy and did my high school diploma at the same time, and I enjoyed plenty of sporting success. It was hard at the end, but all in all, I can look back on a very good spell.

You'll be 28 next year. What are your remaining career goals?
I want to keep on delivering consistently good performances, and I'd happily play in the Champions League again...

A very muffled comeback with all the blabber surrounding Podolski.
