Hoeneß: 'We're up and running'

Postby FCBayernNews » Mon Nov 10, 2008 9:15 am

The Bayern party set off home for Munich in satisfied mood on Sunday evening after a 2-1 win away to Schalke which took the champions to within a point of top spot in the Bundesliga. "We're heading in the right direction and we're set for success," said goalscorer Luca Toni. General manager Uli Hoeneß agreed: "We knew we'd be up and running if we won today - and that's very much the case."

Reaction to Schalke v Bayern:

Franz Beckenbauer: "Obviously it's a deserved victory, although it was fortunate as well today. Both goals came from superb moves, it was wonderful to watch, but we didn't invest enough after that. Schalke were the busier side in both halves, but they simply failed to score. If they'd made more of their corners and set-pieces, they might have taken more from the game."

Uli Hoeneß: "We knew we'd be up and running if we won today - and that's very much the case. It's an important win for our belief and team spirit. It's time to mobilise the whole of Bavaria, not just in politics, but in football too. I think we're all on the right track."

Jürgen Klinsmann: "Heading for home with all three points is very satisfying. Schalke put us under a lot of pressure in the first half. We had to correct a few things tactically at half-time, and we kept it a lot tighter after that, so we were a lot more comfortable down the flanks. Our aim is to go top as soon as possible. If we keep on collecting points like this, it's just a matter f time."

Luca Toni: "It was a crucial match for the championship. We're only a point off the top now. We're heading in the right direction and we're set for success."

Franck Ribéry: "We've caught up a lot of ground and we're hoping to be top at Christmas. The first priority today was to avoid defeat. It's always hard to win away to Schalke, because they're a good team with a fantastic crowd behind them."

Mark van Bommel: "We were very effective and defended well today, with the exception of their goal. We need to focus on ourselves, and keep on winning our matches."

Fred Rutten (Schalke coach): "We played good football in the first half and created chances, but Bayern were superbly efficient. We weren't, and you don't win matches if you don't score goals."

Heiko Westermann (Schalke): "Bayern were ruthless in front of goal. They had two chances and scored twice. We haven't thrown the title away today, but it's obviously a bitter defeat. Provided we keep playing football like we did today, I'm not concerned."
