Hoeneß handed second term as president

Postby FCBayernNews » Fri Nov 16, 2012 12:10 am

Uli Hoeneß will serve a second term as FC Bayern president after receiving the backing of 97 percent of the members present at Thursday evening's Annual General Meeting. The former player and general manager, up for re-election after assuming the club's highest office in 2009, will continue to chair the FC Bayern Munich AG Supervisory Board, and also now has two new vice-presidents on the executive committee in Karl Hopfner and Rudolf Schels.

In the committee election, only 69 of the 2,591 members present voted against the new committee, with six abstentions. Previously, the meeting voted unanimously to release the previous committee, comprising Hoeneß and vice-presidents Dr Fritz Sharer and Bernd Rauch, a formality meaning the membership approves the committee's actions. With Scherer and Rauch not standing for re-election, the new senior vice-president is Hopfner, who is stepping down as FC Bayern Munich AG deputy chairman at the end of the year and moving to a voluntary function at the club after 30 years on the full-time staff. He will join Hoeneß on the Supervisory Board. The second vice-president will be 63-year-old entrepreneur Schels, who joined the Bayern Advisory Board in 2009.

"I''m very proud. I will continue to apply my efforts to FC Bayern and help shape the club in my new role," said Hopfner, who previously announced record turnover of €373.4 million and a profit of €11.1 million in his final appearance at the AGM as board director responsible for finance. Schels commented: "The privilege of contributing to the success of this magnificent club as a member of the committee is not only a great honour, it is a duty. The duty is to continue this success into the future."

Hoene commented: "Being president of this club is a dream." However, he confessed to a sense of melancholy during the AGM, as the club is "in a transitional phase" in terms of its leadership. The departure of Scherer and Rauch means Hoene loses "two proven fighters. They were fantastic partners who made my work as president relatively easy. I''m eternally thankful for that."

Standing ovation and awards

The meeting rose to applaud Scherer and Rauch, before the club named them honorary vice-president and honorary member. "I leave with a clear conscience," said Rauch, "I''ve done what I could. I did everything in the conviction it was right, and right for this club." In a parting message to the committee, Rauch said: "Take care of our magnificent amateur sports sections! They're the foundation for everything which has made our club big and strong."

Scherer recalled his passion and commitment to the club in a total of 33 years as an official. "It was a lot of work, but brought a lot of joy," he said, admitting that parting was not easy, but that Hopfner was "the perfect successor. I can''t imagine anyone better. He knows the club better than anyone else. As for me, my heart and my thoughts will always be with FC Bayern."
