Hitzfeld: “Klose can’t even jog”

Three days before the return leg of Bayern’s UEFA Cup tie against Belenenses in Lisbon, there’s been not let up in the Reds’ injury problems. On the contrary, on Monday Oliver Kahn joined the long-term absentees Philipp Lahm, Willy Sagnol, José Ernesto Sosa and Valérien Ismael, while according to coach Ottmar Hitzfeld the involvement of Miroslav Klose in Portugal remains “highly questionable”.

The German international striker, who was forced to depart early from Saturday’s game in Leverkusen with an injury to the fibula, was again unable to train. “He’s in considerable pain and can’t even jog,” said Hitzfeld, who nevertheless has not written off his top scorer for the Lisbon game. “We will do everything we can to get him fit to play on Thursday.

For one frightening moment on Monday it looked as though Lukas Podolski might have joined the casualties. The striker, who has a strong chance of starting the game in Lisbon if Klose is unavailable, twisted his right foot during training, but after a short break for treatment the 22-year-old was able to continue, and his presence on Thursday doesn’t seem to be in doubt. “I don’t think it’s anything serious,” Hitzfeld said.

Bastian Schweinsteiger, Marcell Jansen and Luca Toni all skipped training on Monday “as a precaution”, according to Hitzfeld, who ordered the trio to do restorative exercises instead. There’s little doubt of their fitness for Lisbon, nor that of Mark van Bommel. Following the game in Leverkusen it was feared that the Dutchman had broken a toe, but following an X-ray he received the all-clear. The day’s good news was that it was only a bruise.
