Hitzfeld forced to improvise in training

The group of players supervised in training by Ottmar Hitzfeld on Wednesday afternoon was modest in size to say the least, as the Reds boss took charge of just eleven outfield players. Around half the squad was missing, some with injury or illness, and others opting for indoor regeneration exercise following Tuesday evening's triangular tournament in Salzburg.

"We've had to improvise yet again, but we're used to that around here," Hitzfeld remarked, before passing on news of his missing personnel. "Martin Demichelis has stretched a muscle again and he's been to Dr Müller-Wohlfahrt for treatment. Lucio is sick and can't train. Owen Hargreaves has gone for a run, and if it goes well, he'll be back in training tomorrow."

Willy returns

Lukas Podolski reported a strained calf muscle on returning from the Bulls Cup, "but it's nothing serious. I'll train again tomorrow," the striker himself advised. On a more positive note, France star Willy Sagnol has shaken off a niggling knee problem and resumed the training programme.

Hitzfeld at least had three-quarters of his first-choice back four available in the shape of Sagnol, Daniel van Buyten and Philipp Lahm. The Bayern head coach declared his intention to continue working with the defenders on a more watertight and stable rearguard ahead of Saturday's trip to face Alemannia Aachen, Munich's conquerors in the Cup before Christmas. "We still have areas to work on," Hitzfeld commented.
