Heynckes: We only played well for 45 minutes

Postby FCBayernNews » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:20 pm

One good half of football isn't enough, the Bayern camp concluded after the goalless draw with Freiburg. "For 45 minutes, we played the way you have to play here - but we gifted them the first 45 minutes," said Jupp Heynckes. Christian Nerlinger described himself as "very pensive. We lacked basics like aggression, attitude and work-rate,". With an eye on the table, Philipp Lahm spoke of a "huge setback. We have plenty to discuss over the next few days."

Reaction to Freiburg v Bayern:

Christian Nerlinger: "I'm mystified by this performance. The first half in particular has left me very pensive. It seemed as though a few of the players haven't grasped what's at stake. We lacked basics like aggression, attitude and work-rate. If you compare the two teams in terms of individual class, it's a game Bayern have to win. Obviously, we've not lost the title yet, but it's no longer in our own hands."

Jupp Heynckes: "We were sluggish in the first half. We obviously thought we'd succeed with pretty football. What we should have done is resist energetically, we should have matched their approach, picked up the pace - but we didn't do that until the second half, when we applied pressure and made a few chances. That's what you have to do for 90 minutes against a team fighting for their lives. For 45 minutes, we played the way you have to play here - but we gifted them the first 45 minutes. In terms of the table, it's two points dropped. The teams at the top are very stable, so normally, you can't allow yourselves the kind of lapse we've suffered today."

Philipp Lahm: "We invested much too little in the first half. We weren't prepared to run hard enough, we weren't aggressive enough, we didn't show up in fact. We have plenty to discuss over the next few days. Today's result is a huge setback. Before the weekend, it was in our own hands, but we've thrown away that position now."

Dirk Dufner (Freiburg director of sport): "It was very intense and a special match for us. I'm very, very satisfied. The point will give us a lot of confidence for our forthcoming matches."

Christian Streich (Freiburg coach): "It's great to take a point against such a strong team. It was tight, but we deserved the draw."

Oliver Baumann (Freiburg keeper): "It's only a point, but it feels unbelievably good. We were very good tactically, Bayern hardly created any chances. They were only dangerous from set plays. All credit to the team. We even came close to landing a lucky punch at the end, that would have been outstanding."

Johannes Flum (Freiburg midfielder): "We were seven times better than in the reverse fixture. We're proud and we were very committed. It's not easy against Bayern, with all their strong individuals."

Is he talking about the first game :? ? Because the "way you have to play here" doesn't really apply to tonight's game...
