Heynckes: We had to roll up our sleeves

Postby FCBayernNews » Sun Mar 03, 2013 10:10 pm

It was "exceptionally hard work," said Jupp Heynckes following Bayern's narrow but deserved 1-0 victory away to Hoffenheim. "We ground out the win - it wasn't brilliant, we didn't sparkle, but three points are on offer for that too." Match-winner Mario Gomez felt FCB's performance was "efficient. We didn't play well today, but sometimes you have to win without playing well - and that's what we're doing."

Reaction to Hoffenheim v Bayern:

Jupp Heynckes: "It was a very difficult match today. Our opponents are caught between a rock and a hard place. They were unbelievably courageous, aggressive and hard-running. We ground out the win today - it wasn't brilliant, we didn't sparkle, but three points are on offer for that too. You can't score three or five goals every weekend. We had to roll up our sleeves. We needed a little time before our engine started running hot. We didn't have that many clear-cut chances. We improved in the second half, when we had the game totally under control. But overall, it was exceptionally hard work."

Mario Gomez: "Efficient is the right word today. We've made chance after chance in many of our games, but not today. These are the games you have to win, and that's what we're doing. We didn't play well today, but sometimes you have to win without playing well. That's the decisive factor for us. Hoffenheim defended really aggressively. As a striker, you're waiting for the one big moment - just as I did. I'm delighted I put it away."

Bastian Schweinsteiger: "Especially in the second half, we could have done better from one or two of our counter-attacks, and scored the goal which would have wrapped it up. It would have calmed the whole thing down. It wasn't our best performance, but we're just pleased we won."

David Alaba: "We prepared well, but it was never easy against this Hoffenheim team, who did really, really well. They pressed high up the field and fought brilliantly. Fortunately, we've taken the three points, and that's what matters."

Tom Starke: "It's always difficult coming back to the bread-and-butter after an outstanding match like Wednesday's. We struggled to get going and Hoffenheim did well. But at the end of the day, we've prevailed and taken the three points. Sometimes you have to grind out the victories."

Marco Kurz (Hoffenheim coach): "We were very brave. Everyone saw that my team dug deep today. Especially in the first half, we were very, very determined and actually made more chances. But if you want to keep any options open against Bayern, you have to score. My team never gave up, and that was an important signal against all-powerful opponents. In terms of willingness and tenacity, the team did what we expect from ourselves for the full 90 minutes. Next week's match against Fürth will be a completely different game between teams fighting for their lives."

Daniel Williams (Hoffenheim): "If we'd shown as much passion in our other matches as we showed today, we wouldn't be stuck where we are now. We battled away and had the right attitude - and that's the only way it can be in a relegation dogfight. But we mustn't play like that just because it's Bayern, it has to be like that in every game. We have to take all three points next week in Fürth, or it'll be very tough indeed."
