Heynckes: A tough but manageable task

Postby FCBayernNews » Fri Aug 05, 2011 11:30 am

Bayern will face Swiss runners-up FC Zurich over two legs for the right to enter the group stages of Europe's elite club competition this season, following Friday's draw for Champions League qualifying at UEFA's Swiss headquarters in Nyon. FCB were drawn to play the first leg at home, just two weeks from now.

"Swiss football has come a long way recently, and we'll have to be very cautious. But I think it's a manageable draw, and we have a very good chance of making it into the group phase," FCB head coach Jupp Heynckes told FCB.tv in an instant reaction to the draw. "It's good we don't have far to travel at this early stage of the season. We'd expect to have sufficient class to make it to the next round."

The pairing with FCZ means Bayern have avoided Russian side Rubin Kasan, Dutch runners-up Twente Enschede, Danish surprise package Odense BK, and Udinese Calcio, the fourth-placed finishers in Italy, in the crucial play-offs.

Apart from Bayern, who were effectively the top seeds on Friday with the best UEFA coefficient of any club in the draw, the other teams in Pot 1 were Premier League outfit Arsenal, Villarreal from Spain, Lisbon giants Benfica, Olympique Lyon from France

The first leg of the play-offs takes place on 16 or 17 August, with the return the following week on 23 or 24 August.

Champions League play-off draw

Odense v Villarreal
Twente v Benfica
Arsenal v Udinese
Bayern v FC Zurich
Lyon v Rubin

Luckily Zürich is very close to München, so any issue of fatigue would be minimized.
The ideal team
