Henke oversees busy day at training ground

Not long into the working day at the Säbener Strasse on Monday, the players’ car park looked almost as full as normal, with rows of company Audis parked neatly in front of the professionals’ quarters. This was odd: surely Ottmar Hitzfeld had awarded his players a day off after the 1-0 win in Bielefeld the previous day?

“It only applied to the players who were in the squad for Bielefeld. Some of the others, who had Sunday off in any case, were required to report in,” assistant boss Michael Henke later explained. With Hitzfeld absent on business, Henke and fitness specialist Svonko Komes took charge of events at the training ground.

The men for whom it was a standard working day were Lucio, currently suspended in the Bundesliga, Valerien Ismael, and injured pair Willy Sagnol and Bastian Schweinsteiger. Lucio, Schweinsteiger and Ismael were joined voluntarily by Lukas Podolski for a stamina and speed-building session on the training ground, while others spent their time indoors.

Jose Sosa initially reported for a spot of treatment before making his way to the weights room, where he found himself in the company of number two keeper Michael Rensing and youngster Toni Kroos. Sagnol, who Henke said should be ready to go running on Tuesday, received attention to a bruised calf, where he was joined by fellow countryman and Sunday’s match-winner Franck Ribery, suffering the same complaint.

Schweinsteiger comeback in the offing?

“The fact so many players came in on their day off speaks volumes for the spirit in the dressing room,” declared Henke, who had positive news of Schweinsteiger. “He’s in good shape, and he trained well too,” the assistant coach reported.

Schweinsteiger has been sidelined recently with an inflamed knee. Henke was unable to say whether the midfielder will feature against Duisburg on Saturday: “He needs a good run in training, and then we’ll see if the knee reacts.“
