Hargreaves back in action, concern over Sagnol

Postby FCBayernNews » Sat Jan 13, 2007 7:10 pm

With a shout of "Owen, come here!" directed at the far corner of the Palace sports facility in Dubai, coach Felix Magath heralded <b>Owen Hargreaves'</b> return to first-team duty on Saturday. The England midfielder gathered up his kit and sprinted over to join the squad for the first time since breaking a leg four months ago. Two weeks remain until the Bundesliga finally awakes from its winter slumbers.

"I really enjoyed training with my friends again," Owen declared after a practice match, "I'm as good as back in action." The player will report to club doctor Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt on Monday "for a final check-up, but it's looking good."

<b>Mehmet returns</b>

Magath has always maintained the 25-year-old utility man has a key role in his future plans, and was naturally delighted to see the versatile midfielder back in action. The head coach rated Hargreaves' chances of being fit in time for the first fixture after Christmas as good. "He's basically a very fit player. I reckon he has a very good chance of taking part in the first match."

The coach was equally delighted to see <b>Mehmet Scholl</b> rejoin the squad session on Saturday. "Both are definitely good news for the team, provided they're fit," he remarked. Scholl pulled a muscle shortly before Christmas.

<b>Sagnol hampered</b>

By contrast, <b>Willy Sagnol</b> is giving cause for concern, as the France star was restricted to a few laps of the ground the day before and sat out the session on Saturday, following a reaction to an old calf injury. "It's a complicated one," the coach reported, "it's difficult to say when he'll be fit again."

Both <b>Mark van Bommel</b> and <b>Andreas Görlitz</b> also failed to join their team-mates on Saturday, although neither is seriously injured. Görlitz rested a bruised calf, while van Bommel went jogging after twisting a knee the previous day. Both are expected to be fit for the first session back in Munich.

<b>Weary squad</b>

Magath allowed his players a 60-minute practice match by way of rounding off the Dubai training camp, a kickabout which also featured <b>Sebastian Deisler</b> after the midfielder missed the previous day's programme. "It was a fantastic game in the first half, but after half-time, you could see we were a little tired," the coach reported.

That concluded the sporting programme in the Emirate. The party took off for a desert tour in the afternoon, before preparing to fly back to Munich early on Sunday morning. The players have a full day off before reporting for training at 10 am on Tuesday.
