Guardiola bids farewell from Town Hall balcony

Postby FCBayernNews » Sun May 22, 2016 6:30 pm

Munich's Marienplatz was a sea of red and white flags lit by the sun beating down from the blue and white Bavarian sky, with the championship shield and the DFB Cup trophy glittering from the Town Hall balcony for everyone to admire. FC Bayern celebrated the double with around 10,000 fans, concluding a long season and handing Pep Guardiola a heartfelt farewell after three years in Munich.

“It was an incredibly wonderful time. Many thanks Germany, on behalf of myself and my family,” Guardiola told the fans. Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge had just thanked “our friend Pep” for “beautiful football, many trophies and exciting times. Thank you, dear Pep, for three wonderful years.”

Boateng shines as beatboxer

Led by Joshua Kimmich, who was carrying the cup, and captain Philipp Lahm, stadium announcer Stephan Lehmann welcomed “the best football team in Germany” when they appeared on the Town Hall balcony at 15.30. Following a long night in Berlin the double winners had arrived at Munich airport an hour before and transferred to the Town Hall after a short reception.

Lehmann then introduced the players one by one. “Many thanks folks,” a slightly hoarse Thomas Müller said before breaking into a song along with Philipp Lahm. Jérôme Boateng proved his exceptional talent for beatboxing. The exuberant fans sang a birthday tribute to Arturo Vidal, who turns 29 today.

“I know I haven't managed to win the most beautiful title, the Champions League,” said Guardiola, but the Catalan is certain the Bavarians will achieve that feat in near future. “Many thanks FC Bayern, and many thanks, dear fans, for your support.”
