Gruelling fitness programme continues

Postby FCBayernNews » Mon Jul 11, 2011 7:20 pm

After a rest day on Sunday, the Bayern stars resumed their punishing pre-season fitness programme on Monday. At the start of the new week, boss Jupp Heynckes supervised a complete squad, with the exception of Breno (knee), but including midfield general Bastian Schweinsteiger, who sat out the 4-2 victory over Qatar in Arco on Saturday after turning an ankle.

With the training camp in the Trentino region of northern Italy still fresh in the memory, the players had few problems adapting to life back on their home practice ground, as the air temperatures in Munich were not dissimilar to the sizzling summer conditions encountered in Riva del Garda last week. The good weather prompted a crowd of some 500 to make their way to the Säbener Strasse facility to watch the stars at work.

Three weeks ahead of the first competitive fixture of the new campaign, the DFB Cup first round tie away to second division Eintracht Braunschweig, Heynckes intends to continue the "hard and intensive" fitness programme this week, as he indicated prior to the party's departure from Lake Garda. Sure enough, the Monday workout was a sweat-inducing affair, as Schweinsteiger & Co practised high tempo passing following the customary warm-up.

Strong opponents lie ahead

The session was largely taken up by a game of nine-against-nine-plus-one - reserves Cüneyt Köz and Bastian Müller, who also attended the training camp, were retained by the senior squad on Monday - on a half-sized pitch. To encourage rapid exchanges of short passes, the team in possession was only allowed to shoot at goal after ten consecutive touches of the ball. All 19 players threw themselves into the action with great determination and energy, before the session came to a close after around 90 minutes.

Heynckes will supervise two more full days of training before the next friendly match, away to Carl Zeiss Jena at 6 pm on Thursday. After that, the squad will focus on preparations for the Ligatotal!Cup 2011 on 19 and 20 July in Mainz, and the AUDI Cup at the Allianz Arena a week later. "We have some interesting and strong opponents over the next three weeks," Heynckes commented.
