Group leads for Shaqiri, Van Buyten, Martínez

Postby FCBayernNews » Sat Oct 13, 2012 10:00 am

While Bayern's Germany contingent were emphatically dismissing Ireland 6-1 in Dublin on Friday evening, seven other FCB stars were also in international action for their countries, half a dozen of them in World Cup qualifying and one in a friendly. After the final whistles around the world, the Munich players finished with three wins, three draws and a single defeat. Here's our round-up:

Switzerland - Norway
Xherdan Shaqiri and his Swiss team-mates drew 1-1 with Norway in Berne and retained top spot in Group E. The FCB starlet covered the full 90 minutes and set up the opening goal for Mario Gavranovic (79) with a corner. However, Brede Hangeland (81) levelled for the visitors just 120 seconds later. The Swiss remain undefeated at the top of the table and are a point ahead of Iceland, where they play next Tuesday.

Serbia - Belgium
The Belgians and Daniel van Buyten gave notice of intent with a 3-0 victory away to much-fancied Serbia. Christian Benteke (34), Kevin de Bruyne (68) and Kevin Mirallas (90+1) scored for the Red Devils in Belgrade, with Van Buyten spending the game on the bench. Belgium now top Group A with two wins and a draw from their three games.

Macedonia - Croatia
The Belgians' closest rivals at the moment are Croatia with striker Mario Mandzukic. The East Europeans won 2-1 away to Macedonia in Skopje and go second in Group A, where they too remain undefeated. Agim Ibraimi (16) handed the home side a surprise lead, but Vedran Corluka (33) and Ivan Rakitic (61) turned the match on its head. Mandzukic was substituted after 73 minutes.

Moldova - Ukraine
Ukraine have now played two qualifiers, but Anatoliy Tymoshchuk and company are still without a win. Skipper Tymo played the full 90 minutes in Chisinau but his side could do no better than a goalless draw with Moldova. Ukraine remain halfway up the Group H standings on two points.

Belarus - Spain
Javi Martínez returned to Minsk and comfortably made up for the disappointment of a 3-1 defeat to Borisov with Bayern on the same ground ten days ago in a 4-0 victory for Spain over Belarus. Jordi Alba (12) and a triple strike from Pedro (21, 69, 74) saw the world champions run up their second win in two games and move to joint top of Group I on goal difference, ahead of France, who visit Madrid on Tuesday. Martínez was an unused sub in Minsk.

France - Japan
Over in Paris, Shinji Kagawa messed up France's dress rehearsal for the showdown with the Spanish as the former Dortmund man fired the only goal of the game with two minutes of the friendly remaining. The home side actually dominated play at Stade de France, where Franck Ribéry entered the fray after 68 minutes, but Les Bleus failed to take their chances and were punished by Kagawa at the end.

Bolivia - Peru
Peru continue to struggle in South American qualifying. Claudio Pizarro failed to appear as the Peruvians were held 1-1 away to Bolivia. Juan Carlos Marino (21) opened for the visitors in the rarefied air of La Paz, some 3,600 metres above sea level, but Alejandro Chumacero (51) equalised after the restart. Peru remain third from bottom in the standings with eight points from eight matches.

Belgium are a very interesting team... I really like them. They have a bright future ahead of them...

Good to see that Ribery and Mandzukic didn't play the full 90 minutes.

I'd imagine Ribery will get the full game against Spain, even if he's got a niggling injury.
