France star turns ankle in training

Postby FCBayernNews » Sun Jul 24, 2011 12:40 pm

Sunday morning training at Bayern ended with a shock for everyone involved with Germany's biggest club, as Franck Ribery had to be carried from the pitch with an injury. A crowd of around 3,000 had earlier watched Jupp Heynckes' men work out as normal, with plenty of time spent on the ball, but shortly before the scheduled end of the session, Ribery appeared to turn an ankle in a tackle and crumpled to the turf.

Surrounded by his team-mates and members of the coaching staff, the 28-year-old was clearly in pain, and received treatment for several minutes where he lay. The winger was then transported from the pitch on a golf cart before limping to the changing room, supported by two members of staff. The player's left ankle was heavily bandaged by now, and his face still reflected the pain. The FCB medical unit will now examine the injury in more detail and issue a diagnosis. "All we can do is wait and see," coach Heynckes told fcbayern.de.

Pre-season disrupted

Bayern fans everywhere will be wishing Ribéry all the best and a speedy recovery. The France star has sparkled in pre-season training so far and appeared close to his best form, but there is now a risk of yet another lay-off. Injury has disrupted the player's pre-season preparations in each of the last three summers. He was recovering from groin surgery in 2010, struggled with a left kneecap injury in 2009, and ruptured the ligaments in his left ankle in 2008. The only year the player completed an injury-free pre-season programme was 2007, immediately after he joined Bayern.

Turning an ankle doesn't sound too bad.

However this is his left ankle, one that is already weak from injury. Ligaments don't heal like muscles do, once they are broken they don't heal the same way so this could be a very serious injury, he was just getting in form it would be a shame to lose him now.

Hopefully this is just minor.

Yeah, id does kinda sound like we will have to treat him more carefully and not wear the poor bastard out. Ribery will continue to have injury troubles, so he'll have to be used when it really matters.
