Three days ahead of the DFB German Cup first round tie away to third division Wacker Burghausen, the selection situation at the club has shown significant signs of easing. Miroslav Klose, Franck Ribéry, Marcel Jansen and Daniel van Buyten all resumed the squad training programme on Friday and are expected to be fit for the trip to the east of Bavaria on Monday evening.
"It's starting again for real at last," a delighted Germany international Philipp Lahm declared in advance of the meeting with the side relegated from the second division at the end of last term. The entire squad was fired up for the match, Lahm reported, "because we want to go out there and show what we're made of right away."
Wagner available, Toni still sidelined
With the single exception of Luca Toni, hampered by his two-week lay-off with a knee problem, coach Ottmar Hitzfeld will be able to call upon the preferred starting formation which has gradually emerged from the six-week pre-season preparation period. On Friday afternoon, the Italian World Cup winner joined the rest of the squad for a final performance benchmarking test, but he is out of contention for the trip to Burghausen and next Tuesday's final pre-Bundesliga warm-up in Mallorca.
As a result, reserve striker Sandro Wagner will retain his temporary place in the first-team squad at least until after the Cup tie. Hitzfeld is still without Lukas Podolski, Willy Sagnol, Valerien Ismael, Jan Schlaudraff and youngster Mats Hummels, who turned an ankle earlier in the week.
