First match in Greece since the 80s

Postby FCBayernNews » Tue Sep 15, 2015 1:40 pm

FC Bayern have never before lost to a Greek club in a European tie: they have won five times, drawing twice in seven games. Most recently FCB encountered Aris Thessaloniki in the 2007/08 Europa League, Luca Toni scoring four times in the 6-0 thrashing. Bayern had their last European Cup match in Greece over 30 years ago, a goalless draw with PAOK. It is the first time that FC Bayern and Olympiacos face off in the Champions League (see our Olympiacos profile).

Winning streak in CL openers

The Reds have won all of their last eleven Champions League opening matches. The last group stage defeat, a 3-2 reverse against Deportivo La Coruña, was 13 years ago. Roy Makaay, who later joined the Reds, scored three times for the Spaniards.

Without a win in four away matches

But the men from Munich have had problems in European away matches recently, waiting for a win since four games. The German record champions had their last success in Rome, a crushing 7-1 victory in October 2014. It was only between February 2002 and March 2004 that Bayern had to wait for a CL away win longer, when they went ten matches without a victory.

Olympiacos very strong at home

Bayern's first opponents have won all of their last six Champions League home games, a club record. The last defeat at home was two years ago: a 4-1 reverse against Paris Saint-Germain on 17 September 2013.

More goal fests?

The Bavarians scored 33 goals in the last Champions League season. Not even champions Barcelona were able to match that (31). In three games Thomas Müller and his team-mates even scored six or more goals per match – a record that will not be easy to break.

Carballo as referee

Carlos Velasco Carballo from Spain will referee FC Bayern’s 200th Champions League match. The 44-year-old has taken charge of four FC Bayern matches so far; the Reds won twice, with one draw and one defeat (a 3-1 reverse against Porto in the 2014-15 quarter-finals). His assistants are Roberto Alonso and Juan Yuste.
