FCB's three previous cup victories over BVB

Postby FCBayernNews » Thu May 10, 2012 6:30 pm

Saturday evening's meeting between Bayern and Borussia Dortmund is only the fifth tussle between the clubs in DFB Cup history. Munich, the competition's most successful club with 15 triumphs, have won three of the four clashes with BVB so far, including the 2008 final, and the solitary defeat was on penalties. fcbayern.de looks back at the head-to-head record between the clubs.

Bayern 2 Dortmund 0, January 1966
The first cup showdown was a qualifier for the first round proper on 2 January 1966, when FCB boss Tschik Cajkovski masterminded a 2-0 victory over holders Dortmund. A 30,000 crowd at Grunwald Stadium saw Rainer Ohlhauser and Gerd Müller score first-half goals for Bayern, paving the way for FCB to go on and add a second cup triumph to their maiden success from 1957.

Bayern 4 Dortmund 0, December 1981
Sixteen years now passed before the sides crossed swords again in the 1981/82 third round, with FCB winning 4-0 at the Olympic Stadium. A feeble crowd of just 8,000 saw Bertram Beierlorzer and Wolfgang Dremmler hand Munich a comfortable half-time advantage, before Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Wolfgang Kraus wrapped it up at the end. The Bavarians again went on to make the final, claiming the cup for the sixth time with a 4-2 victory over Nürnberg.

Dortmund 2 Bayern 2, BVB win 5-4 on penalties, September 1992
Bayern travelled to Dortmund in the cup for the first time in the second round of the 1992/93 competition. BVB took an early lead through Knut Reinhardt, but Bruno Labbadia and Mazinho saw the visitors into the lead on the hour. Stéphane Chapuisat levelled with six minutes to play and sent the tie into extra time, which finished goalless. In the shootout, the home side scored all five of their penalties, but Mazinho missed his for FCB.

Dortmund 1 Bayern 2 (aet), April 2008
The most recent cup clash was on 19 April 2008, and it was also the first meeting between the sides in the final. Luca Toni opened the scoring after 11 minutes, but FCB failed to turn their dominance into goals, and Mladen Petric scored a stoppage-time equaliser for the men in yellow and black. Toni completed his brace 13 minutes into extra time to seal Munich's 14th cup triumph.

Of the players who appeared in the 2008 final, six are still with their respective clubs: Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Franck Ribéry for Bayern, and Sebastian Kehl, Jakub Blaszczykowski and Florian Kringe for Dortmund. To summarise, whenever Bayern have beaten Dortmund in the cup, they have gone on to win it - and of course, that isn't going to change as a result of Saturday's match in Berlin.

Ohh I had forgotten that we played them in the final 4 years ago. I had missed that game because I was abroad for 2 days and I didn't have any way to check the result. I remember finding out about it from the newspaper while travelling from Sicily to Malta :)
