FCB win goal-rich benefit match in Aachen

Postby FCBayernNews » Sun Jan 20, 2013 5:00 pm

Thank you FC Bayern! Long-standing but financially troubled Alemannia Aachen received a helping hand on Sunday when the nation's biggest club visited the third division outfit for a benefit match. Coach Jupp Heynckes' men won an entertaining game 5-2 courtesy of a brace apiece from Mario Gomez and Arjen Robben, and a Jerome Boateng strike. Timmy Thiele and Kai Schwertfeger scored early on in each half for Alemannia.

A day after the 2-0 restart victory over Greuther Fürth, Heynckes mainly sent out players who either did not feature at the Allianz Arena or who only played minor roles. Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Thomas Müller, Franck Ribéry, Javi Martínez and Mario Mandzukic remained in Munich for regeneration training, with Sunday's squad also lacking Claudio Pizarro (flu) and Luiz Gustavo (suspension).

Tom Starke deputised for Manuel Neuer in goal, with Rafinha, Boateng, Dante and Diego Contento in the back four. Anatoliy Tymoshchuk and Emre Can anchored the midfield, with Arjen Robben, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Xherdan Shaqiri looking to supply centre-forward Gomez with chances.

In a match played in sub-zero temperatures and in front of a capacity 31,600 crowd at Aachen's Tivoli stadium, the visitors seized control from the start and began creating chances, but the side lying 18th in the third division played cannily on the break and took a surprise 14th-minute lead, Thiele beating Starke with a precise lob.

Gomez and Boateng reply for FCB

Aachen remained dangerous on the counter-attack and Thiele might have done better with a couple more openings in the first 20 minutes, but Bayern were also in attacking mood, with Robben and Gomez letting off range-finders. Heynckes' men finally levelled after 28 minutes when Gomez fired home a low drive from the edge of the box.

The home side continued to hold their own for a spell and made a couple more decent chances, Leipertz seeing his effort beaten away by keeper Starke, and Rafinha clearing off the line from Kefkir after half-an-hour. At the other end, Alemannia keeper Flekken beat away a Robben drive but was powerless to prevent Boateng heading home from close range after 41 minutes to make the half-time score 2-1 to the Bundesliga leaders.

Robben bristling with energy

The opening exchanges after the restart were a little less breezy, largely explained by a raft of Aachen substitutions. Daniel van Buyten, who took over from Dante, came within inches of increasing the lead with a header, but instead the home side equalised after 56 minutes when Schwertfeger netted from the inside-right channel.

But Munich now shifted up through the gears, as subs Toni Kroos and David Alaba helped raise the tempo again midway through the second period. Robben now took centre stage, initially missing the target with two good openings, but then striking a quickfire brace on 74 and 77 minutes to settle the outcome. Gomez rounded off the entertainment and the scoring two minutes after Robben's second by completing a brace of his own.

Kroos won us that game methinks. We've become so reliant on him as the playmaker that when both he and Ribery are out, we just can't play our passing game.

In my opinion, it's either Kroos and Ribery or Muller and Robben. The former shined this season and last. The latter shined together in 2010 and 2011.
