FCB wary of Gunners' attacking armoury

Postby FCBayernNews » Tue Feb 19, 2013 12:40 pm

It's fair to say that a good proportion of the players on both sides are thoroughly looking forward to Tuesday's Arsenal versus Bayern clash. At the pre-match press conference on Monday afternoon, reporters asked Bastian Schweinsteiger when he had last been in touch with Lukas Podolski. "23 minutes ago," grinned the Germany midfielder, checking his mobile phone, "he's delighted we're visiting his city." Karl-Heinz Rummenigge described ex-FCB man Poldi as "one of the good guys" but issued the Germany international with a light-hearted warning: "I hope he's not thinking of scoring. He should think it over very carefully."

But once the match gets underway (Live in English from 8:45 pm CET on fcbayern.de Web Radio), all friendships will be put aside for the 90 minutes. "It'll be tough, for us and for Arsenal," noted Schweinsteiger. The Bundesliga leaders are only too well aware of the attacking threat posed by Podolski and his team-mates.

"They have a number of players who can make the difference. Walcott is quick and Cazorla is good on the ball. If they have a good day, we have to expect a tough evening," warned Arjen Robben. Jupp Heynckes identified the probable key to success at the Emirates Stadium: "We'll have to defend as well as we've become used to."

Manuel Neuer last conceded a goal 609 game minutes ago, and has only let in seven in 22 league fixtures to date. Munich have yet to concede in five matches since the winter break. "All credit to the entire team," said Heynckes on the eve of the clash with the most effective forward line in the Champions League this season: after the group stage, no team had made better use of their chances than Arsenal, who converted 25.6 per cent of their openings.

Wilshere on sparkling form

"They play attractive, creative attacking football," continued the Bayern boss, naming five individuals with the quality to trouble the visiting back four. Podolski and Theo Walcott will likely start on the flanks, with former Montpellier striker Olivier Giroud in the centre, and Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere tucked in behind.

Wilshere lost a full year to injury, but has recaptured peak form of late. "He's one of the best around in his position," said Schweinsteiger, "he's dynamic, he has a cultured left foot and great vision." FCB know they will need to pay special attention to the 21-year-old England international. "We'll try and keep his influence on the match to a minimum, but Arsenal do have ten more players," Schweinsteiger said. The clash between the Gunners' attacking weaponry and Bayern's watertight defence promises to be one of the most engrossing features of Tuesday's big match.
