FCB visit Germania Windeck in first round

Postby FCBayernNews » Sat Jun 05, 2010 11:15 pm

At around twenty to eleven on Saturday evening, a shriek of delight rang out in the ZDF TV studios. It came from the five-strong TSV Germania Windeck delegation, who had just witnessed Germany women's international Kim Kulig draw the Oberliga North-Rhine Westphalia outfit at home to holders Bayern in the 2010-11 DFB Cup first round.

"It's incredible, it's unbelievable, and I'm lost for words," stammered club president Heinz Georg Willmeroth. "We had Schalke last year, and now Bayern. I don't know what we've done, but it's fantastic." The minnows from Windeck lost 4-0 to Bundesliga runners-up Schalke at the same stage last term.

Coach Louis van Gaal and his men thus set out on their quest to retain the domestic knockout crown in Berlin on 21 May 2011 against fifth division opposition. For Windeck, the plum tie with Bayern is the best imaginable gift to mark the club's centenary, officially celebrated with a three-day festival three weeks ago.

The club from the town of 21,000 in the Cologne borough of Rhein-Sieg were promoted to the fifth-tier Oberliga in 2008 and finished a creditable third last season. Coach Heiko Scholz made 159 Bundesliga appearances in the 1990s for Dynamo Dresden, Bayer Leverkusen and Werder Bremen. A cup winner with Leverkusen in 1993, Scholz took the TSV Germania hot seat a year ago.

The tie with FCB, to be played between 13 and 16 August, is almost certain to be switched away from the 2,500 capacity Sportpark Windeck. Last season's Schalke clash was staged at the RheinEnergieStadion in Cologne for capacity and safety reasons.
