FCB's recent record on opening day

Postby FCBayernNews » Wed Aug 07, 2013 6:10 pm

Friday is the day when FCB fans look out their replica shirts, dust down their flags and oil their tonsils ready to sing their heroes' praises. After a break of almost three months, the Bundesliga action resumes with the official opening match at the Allianz Arena between champions Bayern and last season's eighth-placed team Borussia Mönchengladbach. It is the fifth time the pair have met on Matchday 1, most recently two years ago.

However, Munich fans do not hold particularly positive memories of 7 August 2011. Home side FCB dominated throughout but still lost 1-0, as visitors Gladbach converted practically their only chance of the match on 62 minutes while Munich were careless with a string of good openings. However, Jupp Heynckes' side moved on from that disappointment and won their next six league fixtures, although at the end of the 2011/12 campaign, Borussia Dortmund took the championship honours.

Bayern previously met Borussia Mönchengladbach in the first match of the season in 2005/06, 2002/03 and 2001/02, with a mixed bag of results. Eight years ago, FCB comfortably won 3-0 in front of their home crowd by virtue of goals from Owen Hargreaves and a Roy Makaay brace, despite having debutant Valerien Ismael sent off for two yellow card offences in the first half. The sides played out a goalless draw in 2002 and Gladbach won 1-0 in 2001, with both games held on Borussia's then home ground, the Bökelberg.

Reviewing the stats from the recent past, it has to be said that FCB have a patchy record on opening day. Last season was a welcome exception, as Bayern assumed total control against promoted Greuther Fürth and chalked up a commanding 3-0 victory. Thomas Müller, Mario Mandzukic and an own goal by Fürth's Thomas Kleine saw Heynckes' men record a first away win of the campaign. FCB reeled off seven straight wins after that, ending the season as the runaway champions and treble winners.

Victory over the Wolves

The Reds also opened with a win in 2010/11, although it was a close-run thing: the meeting with Wolfsburg looked set to end in a draw, but Bastian Schweinsteiger sent the travelling fans into raptures with an injury time winner. FCB dominated the first half and took the lead through Müller, but Louis van Gaal's men lost their way after the break and Edin Dzeko equalised. Munich struggled for form after that match, losing in Kaiserslautern and playing out goalless draws with Bremen and Köln. FCB finished the season third in the standings behind Dortmund and Leverkusen.

In 2009/10 and 2008/09, the men from Munich started out with draws. A 1-1 stalemate in Hoffenheim four years ago saw Ivica Olic open for the Bavarians, but Chinedu Obasi later levelled. The Bayern team that day featured the likes of Michael Rensing, Danijel Pranjic, Hamit Altintop and Alexander Baumjohann. Despite a poor start to the campaign with only two points from the first three matches, Bayern ultimately finished as champions ahead of Schalke.

Draw with Hamburg

A year earlier, Hamburg made off with a point from Munich in a 2-2 draw, despite the home side going two goals up through Schweinsteiger and Lukas Podolski. Former Bayern pair Paolo Guerrero and Piotr Trochowski hurt their former club with goals for HSV in the first Bundesliga match under coach Juergen Klinsmann, whose line-up included the likes of Christian Lell, Lucio and Zé Roberto. The second match also ended in a draw and Bayern ultimately finished runners-up to Wolfsburg, with Klinsmann gone and Heynckes in as interim coach.
