FCB resume preparations for trophy quest

Postby FCBayernNews » Sun Jan 03, 2010 6:30 pm

The mid-season break officially came to an end at Bayern on Sunday when, as one of the last Bundesliga squads to reassemble after Christmas, the first-team stars reported back to start preparations for the second half of the season. Coach Louis van Gaal supervised his troops, now reduced by four as a result of a flurry of transfer activity, for a late afternoon shakedown following the festive break.

"I'm glad we're getting back into it now," youngster Thomas Müller declared ahead of the first workout in 2010. "The break's done us good, but the urge to play is back again now," commented Mario Gomez as he headed for the changing rooms. After a brief team talk, Van Gaal and his players filed past the Säbener Strasse ServiceCenter onto the main training pitch, in superb condition thanks to the undersoil heating, at around ten to five CET.

Crowd of 350

Some 350 hardy souls braved temperatures below freezing to watch the training session, in which Franck Ribéry was in patently upbeat spirits. The France star is determined to make an immediate impact on his return from a lengthy injury lay-off. Van Gaal is hoping for great things from his fit-again midfielder: "I think we can probably play even better with Franck in the team. And if we can play better than we did in the weeks up to Christmas, we have a decent chance of achieving things - by which I mean a trophy," the Dutchman stated.

Following the workout at the Säbener Strasse, the players are scheduled to regroup at Munich airport, from where the FCB party lifts off at around 10 pm for their winter training camp in Dubai. The squad will swap the German freeze-up for the warm sun in the Emirate on the Persian gulf until 10 January, where the stars will continue gearing up for the battles ahead in the in Bundesliga, DFB Cup and Champions League. "We failed to win a trophy last season, so we want as many as possible this time," Philipp Lahm proclaimed, setting the tone for the mid-season period.
