FCB 'relaxed and motivated' for BVB clash

Postby FCBayernNews » Sat Aug 11, 2012 5:20 pm

Some five weeks ago, Jupp Heynckes started out on pre-season with just 12 players. The squad has been back to full strength for three weeks now, and the Bundesliga restart fixture is not for another two weeks, so Bayern are still in the thick of their summer programme. However, matters turn serious on Sunday in the first meaningful test of the new season, with a trophy at stake against the reigning German champions.

"On the one hand it's still pre-season, but on the other, it will also tell us where we stand. It's a very welcome opportunity to measure our progress at an extremely high level," commented Heynckes in the build-up to the DFL Supercup against Borussia Dortmund at the Allianz Arena on Sunday evening. "It's a very good test for us and we'll give it our best shot," promised Manuel Neuer. Heynckes is expecting his men to be "totally motivated. We're taking the game very seriously and we'll do everything we can to win." However, regardless of the outcome, it is still 'only' a pre-season warm-up.

Bayern do not meet Dortmund in the Bundesliga until the start of December in the 15th round of matches, but a majority of pundits and fans expect the title to end up with one or other of the clubs. Over the last two seasons, BVB have enjoyed an excellent run against FCB, winning the last five matches between the two biggest clubs in German football. All these factors mean the Supercup takes on additional spice this year.

Clash between equals

"But we're not thinking about what's happened in the past," declared Heynckes, "we should approach it with a clean slate, and in a relaxed frame of mind. If so, we'll play much better and more successful football. It's a clash between equals. It'll be decided by nuances and form on the day."

In terms of his line-up, Heynckes is without injured foursome Mario Gomez (ankle surgery), David Alaba (stress fracture), Rafinha (ligaments) and Diego Contento (hairline fracture of the foot). Bastian Schweinsteiger is close to a full recovery from an ankle problem and resumed the team training programme on Saturday, but the head coach is determined to avoid any unnecessary risks and has omitted his vice-captain from Sunday's squad as a precaution. However, veteran warhorse Claudio Pizarro is available again after shaking off a hip problem.

Youth product Can set for first big match

At the other end of the experience scale, FCB youth product Emre Can looks certain to make his first major appearance for the senior team. The 18-year-old is Heynckes' current preferred alternative at left-back. "The lad's come on really well," the coach explained, "so I have to give him a chance in a game of this magnitude. It's what I intend to do unless something major comes up."

Champions Dortmund will be close to full strength, with Sven Bender (groin) and captain Sebastian Kehl (swollen knee) the only confirmed absentees. Mario Götze returns to squad duty after a two-week absence with conjunctivitis. "It's hard to say exactly where we stand, but we'll definitely be very fired up," declared coach Jürgen Klopp, "the Supercup is the first highlight of the season, but the outcome will have no influence whatsoever on the Bundesliga."
