FCB punished for rustiness in front of goal

Postby FCBayernNews » Tue Jul 19, 2011 9:20 pm

There was much to admire in a lively FCB display against Hamburg in Tuesday's LIGA total! Cup second semi-final, but the men from Munich eventually paid for a typically pre-season lack of sharpness, as they created the lion's share of the chances but still fell to a 2-1 defeat.

The 30,900 crowd at the brand new Coface Arena in Mainz for the game of two 30-minute halves saw South Korean starlet Heung-Min Son net twice before half-time for Michael Oenning's reshaped Hamburg side, but FCB had dominated the play throughout and sub Toni Kroos pulled one back before the end, although it was too late to influence the outcome.

For what boss Jupp Heynckes described as the first "serious test" of the pre-season period, Manuel Neuer started in goal, with Daniel van Buyten and Holger Badstuber at centre-half, and Philipp Lahm and reserve Cüneyt Köz at full-back: new signings Rafinha and Jerome Boateng were present at the stadium but spent their evening jogging behind the touchlines.

Luiz Gustavo lined up alongside Bastian Schweinsteiger in defensive midfield, behind the familiar and formidable attacking quartet of Arjen Robben, Thomas Müller, Franck Ribery and centre-forward Mario Gomez.

Bayern dominated possession from the off, but the northerners took a sixth-minute lead when Dennis Aogo's free-kick from the left evaded Neuer and a clutch of bodies in the box, falling nicely at the back stick for Son to arrow home from a tight angle.

The men from Munich angrily responded and the chances began to come, only for Schweinsteiger to head over, Ribery to drive a free-kick wide, and Robben to direct a free header badly off target.

There was a let-off when the dangerous Son miskicked with the FCB goal at his mercy, but the action was mainly at the other end, Müller blasting wide when Robben on the right may have been the better option, and Gomez stumbling with only HSV keeper Tom Mickel to beat.

Kroos pulls one back

The pace slackened towards the end of the first half and Oenning's side came back into it for a spell. Former Chelsea reserve Gökhan Töre drew a fine save from Neuer after twisting and turning into a shooting position, before Dennis Diekmeier, played onside by Badstuber, thrust clear on the right and centred for Son to apply a simple finish.

Hamburg set out their stall to defend now and FCB struggled for chances in the early part of the second half, before Mickel got down comfortably enough to a skidding Robben free-kick, and Gomez wastefully planted a free header over the bar from Ribery's fine dead-ball delivery. The France star dragged a 16-yard effort wide of the target, and Robben's aim was wayward after he had cut inside from the right.

Aogo drew a save from Neuer as HSV risked a foray into the FCB box, but substitute Kroos deservedly pulled one back for the Bavarians with three minutes remaining, crashing a 20-yard volley over the line off both posts. There were some tasty challenges in the frantic closing stages as Munich chased an equaliser, but Hamburg clung on to make tomorrow's final, with Bayern now facing home team Mainz for third place in the early evening kick-off.

rustiness in front of goal? what about our defenders being statues? sure we could have done better (GOMEZ!!) in front of goal, but our defense leaks like a sieve.

The word serious and the phrase "with Daniel van Buyten and Holger Badstuber at centre-half" shouldn't exist in the same sentence...

As bad as it sounds, it will be our central defence if Boateng is injured/suspended/rotated.
