FCB poised to resume assault on triple

05.01.2008

Just under three weeks after a gala 6-0 victory over Aris Salonika in the UEFA Cup, the Bayern first team squad return from holiday season vacation to resume training at 10 am on Monday morning. The first squad session of 2008 marks the start of an assault on a treble for Oliver Kahn, Franck Ribery and Co.

The coaching staff will have just under three weeks to get their men in shape for the first competitive fixture of the new year, a DFB German Cup Round of 16 meeting with third division Wuppertaler SV at the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen on 29 January. The league leaders then return to Bundesliga action three days later away to Hansa Rostock. Hitzfeld's men will contest a total of four mid-season friendlies as part of their winter training programme.

Tailored training schedules

To help the stars maintain physical fitness during the Christmas and New Year break, each was equipped with an individually tailored training plan, assistant coach Michael Henke explained to fcbayern.de: "It's a maintenance programme with the emphasis on stamina. Each plan is tailored to the player's pulse rate and can be completed no matter where the player happens to be.“

A series of tests on Monday will indicate which of the stars was best able to cope with the training schedule, "although I'm assuming they'll all have done satisfactorily,“ Henke advised. The most important phase of this season's winter schedule is a training camp in Marbella, intended to lay the foundations for a successful second half of the campaign. "We'll work hard and intensively while we're there," remarked Henke, who is expecting to welcome the entire senior squad back to the Säbener Strasse on Monday, with the exception of Marcell Jansen (rehab programme after ankle surgery).

Focus on new signing Breno

Winter signing Breno will almost certainly attract the most media and fan attention. The 18-year-old Brazilian, recently named 2007 Player of the Year in his home country, arrives in Munich from FC Sao Paulo as a further defensive specialist. On the other hand, Valerien Ismael and greenhorn pro Mats Hummels are no longer at the club. Ismael has been transferred to Bundesliga rivals Hannover 96, with Hummels sent out on loan to Borussia Dortmund until 30 June 2009.
