FCB focus on fundamentals and fine tuning

Postby FCBayernNews » Thu Jul 21, 2011 6:40 pm

At the same time as the FCB basketball stars were holding their start-of-season news conference in the sports hall at the Säbener Strasse, the footballers were themselves shooting baskets out on the training ground. Team Germany, spearheaded by Manuel Neuer, Holger Badstuber and Toni Kroos, played a game of six-a-side against Team International, featuring Rafinha, Anatoliy Tymoshchuk and Ivica Olic.

The previous evening, Croatia hitman Ivica captained Bayern for the first time in the LIGA total! Cup third-place play-off at the new Coface Arena in Mainz. By the end, Munich had beaten the host club 5-4 on penalties, the 60-minute match having ended in a 2-2 draw. With just 12 days remaining until the first competitive fixture of the new term, it was a satisfactory conclusion to the first real pre-season test.

"It looked good, so we can be pleased," Christian Nerlinger tersely summarised after FCB claimed third spot at the prestige friendly tournament. However, the director of sport had a few warning words for the time remaining until the Bundesliga opener at home to Borussia Mönchengladbach on 7 August. "We still have plenty to do. A couple of the fundamentals need to improve. We're approximately halfway through pre-season, so I'm optimistic we'll have it sorted before the season starts."

Head coach Jupp Heynckes was in agreement. "There are areas in which we have to improve, and we'll be working on those," the 66-year-old stated. The coaching staff have focused on fitness basics in the summer programme so far. "We've worked incredibly intensively," Heynckes remarked, "so it's completely normal to see a few heavy legs at this stage."

Fully prepared for the new campaign

"In the first instance, the players have to be physically in good shape, and then you start to work towards well-organised play, in every aspect of the game. That's why we certainly need a little more time. But we have such a good team, I believe we'll get on top of it quickly," Heynckes confidently predicted. From now until the first competitive fixtures, the boss will turn to fine-tuning his team's tactics.

He will by now have a much clearer idea of where to focus his efforts, specifically the occasional lack of coordination between the different sections of the team, a fact also commented upon by captain Philipp Lahm after the two 60-minute matches in Mainz. "The goals we conceded weren't down to a lack of understanding between the defence and the goalkeeper, it was a problem affecting the whole team. We have to work on that, but it'll be fixed during the next couple of weeks, and we'll be fully prepared for the Bundesliga."

Hoeneß in upbeat spirits

Heynckes and his staff will now work on the details, both in daily training and in the remaining friendly matches. "What we need now is competitive games, giving the players match practice and also helping them re-acclimatise to the pace of a full 90 minutes," said the coach, who is likely to give all his players another run-out against a fan club team in Saturday's Dream Game in Passau, and then at next week's star-studded Audi Cup at the Allianz Arena.

"Regarding the football team, I have a very good feeling," declared club president Uli Hoeneß, addressing the FCB basketball news conference. At the same time, the players who did not feature in the previous evening's match were working out with Heynckes and his staff, while the team against Mainz warmed down with their game of basketball. And for the record, Team International won it 17-12, posing happily for the obligatory winners' photo afterwards.
