FCB fans hail their champions

Postby FCBayernNews » Sun May 15, 2016 4:35 pm

Sunday's traditional championship celebrations reached their climax on the Munich Town Hall balcony in perfect weather conditions. More than 15,000 fans flocked to Marienplatz to see their stars hoist the shield into the blue and white Munich sky and to celebrate the double championship for the FCB men and women, just like last year.

Both teams accepted an invitation by Mayor of Munich Dieter Reiter to present the two championship shields under the motto “We are the Champions - #4everNumberOne.” After an internal party at the Postpalast and a short night's sleep the men and women appeared side by side on the balcony at just after half-past two.

Just like last year, stadium announcer Stephan Lehmann summoned the players onto the balcony in pairs: the two captains Philipp Lahm and Melanie Behringer, Thomas Müller with Melanie Leupolz. David Alaba accompanied two women at once, Vero Boquete and Viktoria Schnaderbeck. “It's a highlight! So many fans have come and created a great atmosphere. It's been great fun! The fans deserve to see us,” Leupolz commented.

Return next Sunday?

The women will be officially honoured after their last league fixture on Monday, but the fans on the red-and-white Marienplatz welcomed them warmly. “It's beautiful every year,” declared Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. “It's not a matter of course even if it's the fourth year in a row,” the FCB chairman stressed.

Host Dieter Reiter spoke of an “outstanding season” for FC Bayern. “If the best runners-up of all time come up ten points short you know how strong the champions are.” The last word fell to the departing head coach: “I love this city. I'll return, I'm sure,” Pep Guardiola said after three years in Munich and his third German championship title.

Which might happen sooner than Guardiola thinks. Rummenigge announced: “If we win the DFB Cup in Berlin we'd like to return next Sunday.”
