Double workload ahead of Schalke and Milan

Construction work to extend the facilities at Bayern's Säbener Strasse headquarters and training ground is well underway, the site teeming with activity and pockmarked with huge mountains of excavated earth. The senior squad is doing its best to match the building crew's impressive workrate, as the stars aim for peak form and fitness ahead of Saturday's crunch Bundesliga fixture at home to leaders Schalke, and the midweek Champions League showdown against AC Milan.

With the decisive phase of the season on the near horizon, head coach Ottmar Hitzfeld scheduled double training for both Tuesday and Wednesday. After a stamina-focused session on Monday, Tuesday's programme initially concentrated on reaction times and tactical schooling, before an afternoon workout centred on positioning and possession.

Praise for Germany coach

To Hitzfeld's obvious delight, two-thirds of the squad reported for duty despite a packed international schedule in midweek. That meant a doubling in the size of the party from just eight players on Monday to sixteen on Tuesday, partly due to the return from a two-day break of Valérien Ismael, Andreas Ottl, Christian Lell and Andreas Görlitz, who all featured for the reserves on Saturday. Numbers were further boosted by the presence of Lukas Podolski, Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Daniel van Buyten and Ali Karimi, all released early by their respective national coaches.

"I'm grateful to Jogi Löw for being so reasonable," Hitzfeld told fcbayern.de after the Germany coach sent his Bayern trio home to Munich following Saturday's Euro 2008 qualifier in Prague, and despite a friendly meeting with Denmark on Wednesday. "Our players have two midweek games coming up. A friendly on top of that would have been too much," Hitzfeld summarised.

Schweinsteiger doubtful

However, one dark cloud appeared in an otherwise clear sky as Schweinsteiger returned from international duty nursing a bruised thigh and was unable to take part in Tuesday's programme. "He's doubtful for Saturday," the head coach reported.

Mark van Bommel also missed the afternoon session, reporting for treatment after feeling a hamstring stiffen in the morning, but the Dutch midfielder's fitness poses a less serious concern as he is expected to play a full part in Wednesday's double workout.
