Confidence rising fast as FCB hit their stride

Postby FCBayernNews » Sun Aug 21, 2011 4:20 pm

Slowly but surely, this season's Bayern team is beginning to gel and register the results everyone at the club wants. Following back-to-back victories over Wolfsburg and Zürich, FCB looked in a different class at times as they dismissed Hamburg 5-0 on Saturday, another confidence-boosting result prior to Tuesday's Champions League play-off return away to the Swiss runners-up.

"We can all be very satisfied, with the result, and especially with the way we played," boss Jupp Heynckes declared after his team's rousing performance in front of a 69,000 capacity crowd at the Allianz Arena. "We were very aggressive and full of running, and we never gave Hamburg a sniff. It was definitely our best performance of the season so far," the coach continued.

"I can categorically rule out us being blown away again," HSV captain Heiko Westermann insisted before kick-off, recalling a 6-0 pasting in the corresponding fixture last season. Those brave words sounded empty by half-time on Saturday, after Daniel van Buyten (13), Franck Ribéry (17) and Arjen Robben (34) all scored excellent goals, effectively sealing victory over the outclassed visitors with 45 minutes still to play.

In the second period, Mario Gomez (56) and Ivica Olic (80), marking his return after fully 10 months out of league action, rounded off a comprehensive victory, in which Bayern could very easily have run up a cricket score. "There were no areas for improvement today. If you really want to be critical, you could say we should have scored more often. But we can be very pleased with the football we've played today," noted Robben.

"We're on track and we're coming on well with every match," commented Gomez. Not for the first time, the striker's work rate was exemplary, but his strike rate was below par, as a string of chances went begging. Mario refused to be ruffled. "When you're creating as many chances as we are, it's a normal situation. You can't put away every single chance, so the important thing is that we're creating them," mused last season's leading scorer. "And you have to say Hamburg didn't have one of their better days."

Following a third clean sheet on the bounce, Heynckes reserved his most fulsome praise for his side's defensive line: "The team showed we can only do it when we play as a tight unit, not just going forward, but also in defence. This is what pleases me most: we've again avoided conceding a goal, and we basically prevented them creating any chances at all."

Robben and Ribéry on fire

"We were comfortable on the ball today and made very few mistakes as we moved forward," said keeper Manuel Neuer, a virtual spectator for the whole afternoon. "That was a truly comfortable victory, and our fans will be delighted." Star wingers Robben and Ribéry were in good spirits töo. "I enjoyed that," Ribéry stated. "That's the most fun we've had so far this season," added Robben, although the Dutch ace also issued a warning: "We mustn't let up now."

Bayern are now nicely positioned among the leading group in the early Bundesliga standings, and will travel to Zürich confident of getting the result they need. Following the 2-0 victory in the home leg, a draw of any sort would be enough to see FCB through to the Champions League group stage. "And once we're even more settled and all the players reach peak form, we'll be even better," Heynckes concluded.
