Coach: That was a very important victory

Postby FCBayernNews » Sat Feb 02, 2013 7:30 pm

Mainz proved tough opponents on Saturday, but Bayern were ready for the side lying fifth in the table. "We prepared extremely thoroughly," confirmed Jupp Heynckes following his side's 3-0 win, "that was a very important victory on the road to the title." Thomas Muller opened the scoring and said afterwards: "It was hard work, but we were on hand when Mainz gave us the chance. That was a good day."

Reaction to Mainz v Bayern:

Jupp Heynckes: "We knew it wouldn't be easy and we prepared very thoroughly. The team put our plan into action very well. That was a very important victory on the road to the German championship title."

Thomas Müller: "We're pleased about winning a difficult away game in Mainz 3-0, but we know it was a hard job of work. In the first half Mainz were just what you expect of them at home: plenty of bite, very aggressive and as tricky as we had expected. Scoring the opening goal was definitely important. We were on hand when Mainz gave us the chance. We set off well into the second half, and that was basically that. It was a good day."

Mario Mandzukic: "We're doing what we did so well in the first half of the season: we're playing as a team, we go out onto the field and fight, and we know we have the quality. The important thing is that each man is there for the others. I think that shows we're a very good unit."

Thomas Tuchel (Mainz coach): "In the first half we were very watchful and hard-working, and even had slightly more chances than them. We knew after going behind it was the worst situation we could find ourselves in. At the end of the day, Bayern's win is the right result and deserved."

Andreas Ivanschitz (Mainz): "We were very good in the first half and had the better of the chances, but when you play Bayern, one of the chances has to go in, so you can fill your lungs and take a deep breath. We put in a lot of work and covered a lot of ground in the first half. At half-time we pledged to give it everything and summon up all our reserves, but only three or four minutes later we were 2-0 down. After that you're just chasing shadows. Bayern are very smart and experienced, and allow you almost no chances, which makes it hard to turn a game on its head."

Christian Wetklo (Mainz): "We weren't the worse of the teams in the first half. We made life really difficult for Bayern before half-time."
