Classy Bayern ease into last sixteen

Postby FCBayernNews » Tue Nov 25, 2008 11:00 pm

A Miro Klose brace and Luca Toni's maiden Champions League goal saw Bayern complete an ultimately routine victory over a limited Steaua Bucharest side and progress to the knockout stages after Christmas.

The 64,000 crowd at an icy Allianz Arena saw the German champions pound away at the Romanian goal in the opening quarter of an hour, but not for the first time this term, the Bavarians were careless with their early chances and stalemate prevailed at half-time.

Klose finally broke the deadlock just short of the hour, Toni heading home shortly afterwards to put Munich firmly and deservedly in the driving seat.

Germany star Klose completed his brace 20 minutes from the end to put the result beyond doubt as Bayern engaged cruise control, sealing the win which leaves them needing a scoring draw or better in Lyon on Matchday 6 to finish top of Group F.

Van Buyten for Demichelis

Bayern showed a single change to the side which eased past Energie Cottbus at the weekend, Daniel van Buyten making his first start in nearly two months for the injured Martin Demichelis (calf).

The line-up otherwise contained no surprises, captain Mark van Bommel anchoring a midfield featuring attacking trio Franck Ribery, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Ze Roberto, supporting first-choice front two Toni and Klose.

Dominant Bavarians

Once Dutch official Eric Braamhaar whistled play underway on a freezing evening in Munich, the opening exchanges rapidly developed into a personal duel between Toni and Steaua keeper Robinson Zapata, the Bucharest shot-stopper twice making point-blank saves to deny the big Italian after deft Klose lay-offs.

FCB utterly dominated the clearly nervous visitors, Toni narrowly missing the target on two further occasions before the first ten minutes were up, but Dayro Moreno finally warmed Michael Rensing's gloves and Mirel Radoi acrobatically fired wide as the Romanians slowly settled to the task.

Klose had the ball in the net on 27 minutes from Toni's perceptive flick only for the Italian to be ruled offside, before Zapata again excelled to beat away Van Buyten's header, Klose blasting the rebound high into the crowd. The tempo dropped for a spell before Dorin Goian drew a good diving save from Rensing, and Toni headed wide from a corner as the first half petered to a close.

Double whammy

Lucio reacted well to clear from Bogdan Stancu in the first incident after the restart, but Bayern were soon piling on the pressure again and Toni twice came close, firing over from Ribery's lay-off and directed a header from Philipp Lahm's pinpoint cross straight at Zapata.

But Bayern were not to be denied for long, and a double whammy either side of the hour mark effectively settled the issue on the night. Klose opened the scoring after 57 minutes, jabbing home from Ribery's bouncing header after a Massimo Oddo cut-back, before Toni netted his long overdue maiden goal in the Champions League, finishing with his head from a lovely move fashioned by Lucio and Klose on 61 minutes.

Miro's brace

Radoi tested Rensing and sub Florin Lovin headed across goal as the home side took a pause for breath, but a superb Ze Roberto ball out of defence opened the way for Munich's third, Ribery collecting the ball in his own half and sprinting clear before leaving Klose with the simplest of tasks to net with the outside of his boot after 71 minutes.

Breno replaced Lucio and Tim Borowski took over from Toni in the closing stages, the former Bremen man shooting at Zapata when scoring looked easier. Rensing also enjoyed a chance to show off his class, saving adeptly from Moreno and sub Semedo, but Bayern had the final couple of chances through Klose as the Bavarians completed a clear-cut victory with something to spare.
