Clash of record streaks - one must end

Postby FCBayernNews » Tue Apr 23, 2019 1:45 pm

Only four days after FC Bayern's crucial Bundesliga victory over Werder Bremen, the two teams face off at Bremen's Weserstadion on Wednesday to battle it out for a berth in the DFB Cup final. The two sides faced off in the cup semi-finals three years ago, when a Thomas Müller brace sent Bayern through to Berlin before the men from Munich won the cup for the last time. fcbayern.com has collected more facts and stats prior to the clash.

Two imposing streaks will clash on Wednesday. Werder have come out on top in all of their last 37 cup matches at the Weserstadion, a record in this competition. Werder's last home defeat dates back to April 1988, a 1-0 reverse in the semi-final against Eintracht Frankfurt, who went on to win the cup. Bayern boast the longest away streak in cup history, having advanced to the next round in all of their last 29 matches on the road. Their last defeat dates back to March 2009, a 4-2 reverse against Bayer Leverkusen.

FC Bayern have won seven of their eight DFB Cup matches against Bremen, including the two finals in 2000 and 2010. Werder only won on 12 June 1999, when they beat Bayern on penalties in the final.

Werder have won the cup six times, whereas record cup winners Bayern have hoisted the trophy 18 times. The two teams boasting the most titles and the most goals in the competition face off. Bayern have scored a total of 729 goals, whereas Bremen have found the net 564 times. No other side boasts similar numbers.

Bayern extended another streak when they beat FC Heidenheim on penalties, advancing to the last four for the tenth time in a row. Niklas Süle, who saw a red card against the second division side, will miss the match with suspension. The same goes for Nuri Sahin, who was sent off for a second bookable offence in Bremen's quarter-final victory over Schalke. Both would be eligible to play in the final.
