Just two days ahead of the home Bundesliga meeting with Bayer Leverkusen, the injury situation at Bayern shows little sign of improvement. Willy Sagnol (knee surgery) and Bastian Schweinsteiger (swollen knee) are both definitely out, with question marks over midfield organiser Mark van Bommel and utility man Hasan Salihamidzic. The non-starters also include Martin Demichelis (calf) and Mehmet Scholl (hamstring).

Van Bommel missed Friday training with a severe attack of hay fever. "It could actually be a problem," Ottmar Hitzfeld explained after the session. "It's not just his eyes, it's affecting his respiratory system. He can hardly breathe." The Dutch ace reported to a specialist for treatment. "We'll have to wait and see," the head coach commented.

Lucio excused morning duty

The jury is also out on Salihamidzic, another man rested on Friday with a muscle strain. "He's been struggling for quite a while, but he felt the muscle stiffen up against Milan," Hitzfeld reported. "It's high time we took him out of the daily training programme. I hope he's better by Sunday." With Sagnol out for the rest of the season, Brazzo Salihamidzic is currently the club's first-choice right-back. Should he fail to recover, Christian Lell could stand in.

Lucio was also absent from the Friday morning session, but for an extremely good reason: his wife gave birth to the couple's third child during the night, and the Brazilian was duly excused training. He nevertheless reported to the Säbener Strasse in the afternoon for a workout with fitness coach Thomas Wilhelmi.

Active regeneration

On the last day of the Easter holidays, which saw some 1,500 fans enjoying the early summer temperatures at the training ground, Hitzfeld thus took charge of a decimated squad. Just 12 first-teamers reported fit for the session, as Michael Rensing and Stephan Fürstner had already joined up with the reserves for a third division south fixture in the evening.

Followingre the energy-sapping activity of the last few weeks, the session was aimed at active regeneration. "It wasn't particularly intense, as we're trying to relax," Hitzfeld explained. "but we'll up the tempo again tomorrow, and focus totally on Leverkusen."
