Chairman urges team to 'scratch, bite and fight'

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has called on the Bayern stars to atone for last Friday's surprise defeat in the Bundesliga restart fixture away to Borussia Dortmund by bouncing back with a win against Bochum on Tuesday evening. "We need a radically better performance than last Friday. I'm hoping we'll bounce back against Bochum, but that in itself won't be enough. We need a winning streak, difficult as that may be," Rummenigge told a news conference at the Säbener Strasse on Monday.

Despite "first-class preparations" for the second half of the campaign, the chairman reminded his audience of several warnings he had issued over the winter, advising everyone connected with the club not to get carried away. "As we all saw on Friday, not everything appears to be perfect. Our display in Dortmund was a big disappointment." The former world-class striker was "angry" at Bayern's insipid second-half performance, although he insisted the club would remain level-headed. "We're not going to go crazy after a single match and start panicking."

No emergency purchases

The onus was on the playing and coaching staff to devise a recipe for closing the six-point gap between the Reds and leading duo Bremen and Schalke. "We haven't lost the title yet. We have another 16 matches to put right what went wrong last Friday. We need a team prepared to scratch, bite and fight," Rummenigge declared.

The chairman ruled out an emergency raid on the transfer market before the winter deadline on 31 January. "There's nothing on offer except third-rate goods at inflated prices," he scoffed. Despite the loss of Sebastian Deisler and Julio Dos Santos to retirement and a loan period in Wolfsburg respectively, he believed the squad was capable of retaining the domestic league title. "The individual quality in the squad is absolutely sufficient to win the league again this season."

Responsibility on coaching staff

Exploiting this potential was the job of the coaching staff, although Rummenigge pointedly sprang to Felix Magath's defence after club President Franz Beckenbauer, interviewed on TV at the weekend, claimed nothing had fundamentally changed over the winter. "We don't do the coach any favours by offering suggestions via the media. It is his business, and his alone, whether Schweinsteiger plays on the left or in the centre. There's no need to turn it into a fanfare."

"I'm one of the more rational and less excitable folk," Rummenigge continued, although he did have a word of advice for the coaching staff. "The coach is responsible for training, tactics and the team line-up. Fundamentally, we have more than enough quality to hit our targets, but if we fail, we'd have to begin an analysis as to why that was the case."

Oh no! Who cares about winning the Bundesliga? If it was a trophy that has deluded us, then we would, but now we've won it so many times that it became boring. What we really want is to launch a serious challenge for the Champions League.
