Captain Boateng, Tolisso's return, goals for Thiago & Lewy

Postby FCBayernNews » Tue Mar 27, 2018 11:00 pm

Several FC Bayern players were once again in international action on Tuesday. David Alaba and Thomas Müller were given a break by their national teams and are already back in Munich. fcbayern.com summarises the evening’s action.

Boateng captains in his hometown

There was a great honour for Jerome Boateng as the Bayern centre-back led Germany out onto the pitch against Brazil as captain for the first time in his career – and in his hometown of Berlin of all places. However, the proud moment was not crowned with success as the South Americans claimed a 1-0 victory at the Olympiastadion thanks to a first-half goal from Gabriel Jesus. Boateng had to go off in the 69th minute following a knock and was replaced by teammate Niklas Süle. There were seven changes in all to the side that drew with Spain on Friday, which included the new captain and Joshua Kimmich. Sandro Wagner also came off the bench in the second half for Mario Gomez. Mats Hummels and Sebastian Rudy did not feature. The world champions failed to build on their performance from Friday, and the defeat – Germany’s first in 22 games – was just on the balance of play.

Tolisso returns

Corentin Tolisso returned to action for France in St. Petersburg following the shin injury he suffered against Hamburg. The Bayern midfielder came on in the 66th minute for N’Golo Kante in Les Bleus’ 3-1 win over World Cup hosts Russia. Kylian Mbappe bagged a brace either side of a Paul Pogba goal. Fedor Smolov had earlier made it 2-1 for Russia.

Lewandowski strikes for Poland

Robert Lewandowski once again proved his worth for Poland with a goal against South Korea in Chorzow. Kamil Grosicki followed up Lewandowski’s header in the first half before the Bayern man was withdrawn at the break. Germany’s upcoming World Cup group opponents struck back in the second half with goals from Chang-Min Lee and Hee-Chan Hwang. However, Piotr Zielinski secured an injury-time win for Poland.

James endeavours without success

Colombia and James Rodriguez ended this international break with a goalless draw against Australia at Craven Cottage in London. The Bayern man continually tried to push his team forward before his substitution in the 83rd minute, but he and his colleagues failed to find a way through the Socceroos’ compact defence.

Thiago scores in thrashing

Thiago once again started for Spain following an impressive performance against Germany on Friday and even got onto the scoresheet. The FCB midfielder struck in the 55th minute of La Roja’s 6-1 win over Argentina. A Diego Costa brace, Isco hat-trick and Iago Aspas goal rounded off the victory in Madrid, while Nicolas Otamendi got one back for the 2014 World Cup runners-up.

No goals for Vidal and Chile

Chile ended their Scandinavian tour with a goalless draw against Denmark following their 1-0 win over Sweden. Arturo Vidal, who scored the winner on Friday, once again started and played 82 minutes in Aalborg, but was unable to push the South Americans onto back-to-back victories.
