Boss admits to 'painful' selection calls

Postby FCBayernNews » Fri Aug 05, 2011 6:30 pm

On Friday, just two days ahead of Bayern's opening Bundesliga fixture at home to Borussia Mönchengladbach, Jupp Heynckes was in sparkling form, beaming from ear to ear and cracking a few gags. However, the FCB boss was probably in a thoughtful mood away from the media, as he faces hard choices this weekend. With the exception of Breno, Heynckes has his entire senior squad available for the Gladbach clash, but he is only allowed to name 18 men in the official matchday squad. That in turn means that three stars, "who would be certain starters at another club," the coach remarked, will be forced to watch the match from the stands.

"It's extremely painful," Heynckes told FCB.tv on Friday. The 66-year-old said he would leave the difficult decisions until the latest possible moment. Two men who will definitely be included in the 18-strong party are Frank Ribéry and Arjen Robben, provided neither suffers a reaction to resuming the full squad programme in recent days. The pair, forced to take it easy at the end of pre-season with ankle injuries, returned to team training on Thursday.

However, it is not certain that the superstar duo will feature in Sunday's match, as Heynckes is keen not to rush them back into action. Neither should the injuries be underestimated, the coach noted: "I want to talk it through with Dr Müller-Wohlfahrt, our chief physiotherapist Fredi Binder, and the players themselves. I'll only decide after that."

Heynckes is following a policy of taking as few risks as possible and minimising the number of players suffering reactions to previous injuries. The coach said that Ribéry and Robben's utter determination to regain fitness in time for Sunday had not gone unnoticed. "Franck has been training the whole week, even when he was in plaster. That's unbelievable!" the boss reported.

Gustavo or Tymoshchuk?

One open question is the identity of Bastian Schweinsteiger's partner in the midfield holding role. Luiz Gustavo filled the position in the cup meeting with Braunschweig, but Anatoliy Tymoshchuk is an equally persuasive option. "Tymo is just as much a regular as Luiz. Both are good players," the coach said, "you'll see who's playing from the line-up." That will also be the moment when Bayern fans find out whether Ribéry and Robben are ready for comebacks.

Hmmmm

This means that we have NO real Starting CDM , and the player that will play depends on the tactic and opponent
