Boateng and Usami train with new team-mates

Postby FCBayernNews » Sun Jul 17, 2011 6:00 pm

Jerome Boateng and Takashi Usami trained with the FCB squad for the first time on Sunday, as Jupp Heynckes began preparing his troops for this week's LIGA total! Cup in Mainz. The 19-year-old Usami and Boateng, three years his senior, both completed their transfers to Germany's biggest club on Friday and reported for duty at the Säbener Strasse training facility on Sunday morning.

"I'd like to wish Jerome Boateng a very warm welcome to Bayern Munich. We're delighted we've succeeded in bringing him here," FCB director of sport Christian Nerlinger said at the official unveiling of the Germany international following the morning workout. "He was utterly determined to come here from the very start," Nerlinger continued.

"The negotiations were tough," the director of sport confirmed, but Bayern eventually hammered out a deal with Manchester City. "This transfer has gone on for weeks and months, but at the end of the day we've been rewarded. We fought to secure his signature." Boateng will be handed his favoured position at centre-half, and has been tasked with firming up the FCB rearguard, which shipped 40 goals against in the league last term.

"I've come here to make the defence more solid," said the father of four-month-old twins. The prospect of "regular football at centre-half" convinced the man capped 13 times by Germany to leave the English Premier League and join Munich after just one season abroad. Whether for Hamburg, City or Germany, the 2009 U-21 European championship winner has never been given time to settle in a specialist position, he said: "I was always moving around from one position to another."

Germany boss approves

With EURO 2012 coming up in under 12 months, good displays for Bayern should boost Boateng's cause in the national team. "It was important to me that Bayern had me marked in for a specific position. I believe it will end up with me playing at centre-back for the national team more often," Boateng declared. National coach Joachim Löw had passed on his approval of the switch to Bayern and sent a congratulatory message, the player revealed.

Nerlinger understandably described the signing as "a win-win situation for both sides. We're stronger, and it's an important step in Jerome's career." The towering Berlin-born defender, praised for his athleticism and professionalism, is now looking for honours. "Our very clear targets are the league and cup, and this team can also go a long way in the Champions League."

Praise from Heynckes

Boateng could appear in a Bayern shirt for the first time this Tuesday in the LIGA total! Cup, when Bayern take on his former club Hamburg. "I'll definitely make the trip, but the coach decides whether I'll play," Jerome stated, reporting "no problems at all" following knee surgery in early April. "I'm a little behind with training because of the long lay-off, but I don't think it'll take long before I'm on the same level as the rest of the team."

"I have a very good impression. He's fitted in with our training programme extremely well," Heynckes said of his new acquisition, who has been assigned the squad number 17. For his part, the player reported "a good talk" with the coach. "I'm delighted to be here, and I'm aiming to help the team."
