Beckenbauer voted onto FIFA Executive

Bayern President Franz Beckenbauer has been elected to the FIFA Executive Committee, the highest organ of world football's governing body, after a show of hands at a European Football Union (UEFA) Congress in Dusseldorf on Friday.

The new post represents both a logical and widely-predicted next step for the 61-year-old as he becomes German football's top representative in the international game. The 52 delegates at the Congress warmly applauded Beckenbauer's nomination, indicating he had been voted into the post unopposed.

"We bid him a very warm welcome. We need to be working with former players," FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter commented. The Bayern President himself accepted the result in typically self-effacing style. "The vote involving me wasn't that important," he remarked. Earlier, the Congress voted by a slim margin to replace long-serving UEFA President Lennart Johansson with former world-class midfielder Michel Platini of France.

Successor to Mayer-Vorfelder

German Football Association (DFB) President Dr Theo Zwanziger declared himself delighted at the election of "our top representative" to the FIFA committee. "You can't imagine a better man to take a highly visible role in the world governing body. We continue to be well represented in the international game." Beckenbauer succeeds former DFB President Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder, who stepped down by prior arrangement after five years in office.

The Kaiser officially takes up his new duties following the world governing body's Congress at FIFA headquarters in Zurich from 29 to 31 May. The Bayern chief will spend the time until then establishing the parameters of his new role, as he will be chairing a FIFA sub-committee. "Let's see where there's a vacancy," he commented.

Commitment to Africa

Ahead of the vote, Beckenbauer announced his intention to continue the ambassadorial duties he successfully undertook as head of the 2006 World Cup organising committee. "Social development is a key concern of mine. I've seen where the poorest of all the poor people live," he declared, indicating a commitment to further promotion of the game in Africa. The situation there reminded him of post-war Germany and his childhood, the 61-year-old explained.

The former Bayern and Germany coach is also keen to maintain direct influence within the DFB, where he is set to run for an executive role at a DFB Congress on 26 October in Mainz. He was formerly a DFB vice-president courtesy of his World Cup organising duties. A suitable post would be found for the new FIFA Executive Committee member, promised DFB general-secretary Horst R Schmidt. There can be little doubt the Kaiser will again be received with warm and friendly applause.

This means less time for him for Bayern matters. But I wish him the best of luck, it's a position he's been deserving for quite some time :)
