Bayern's goalfest against Porto: the best moments

Postby FCBayernNews » Tue Apr 21, 2020 10:45 am

"Never give up:" the FC Bayern players and fans demonstrated the club's mentality in the 2014/15 Champions League quarter-final return leg. Munich had lost 3-1 to FC Porto at Estádio do Dragão the week before, but on 21 April 2015 the players were greeted by an impressive tifo in the return leg at the Allianz Arena, the first highlight on a spectacular night. The fans' support had an effect. Pep Guardiola's men were rampant, scoring goal after goal.

14th minute: Thiago opens

Keeper and ball behind the line: Thiago left Fabiano Freitas powerless.

Bayern dominated proceedings from the off. Robert Lewandowski missed a big chance shortly after kickoff, hitting the post. Bayern were rewarded for their pressure against the deep-lying Portuguese side in the 14th minute, Juan Bernat's pinpoint cross to Thiago rounding off fine interplay around the box. The Spaniard headed in at the near post, sending the Allianz Arena into raptures.

22nd minute: Badstuber and Boateng demonstrate aerial prowess

Jérôme Boateng rose high to head home.

Bayern doubled the lead only eight minutes later. Holger Badstuber won an aerial duel following a corner, heading the ball to Jérôme Boateng, who headed the ball in. Bayern had levelled the scores on aggregate in the 22nd minute.

27th minute: Müller's volley, Lewy's header

The Bayern players and fans were in ecstasy on an incredible night.

But FC Bayern had not had enough and built on the momentum. Philipp Lahm charged down the right, passing to Thomas Müller, who met the ball on the volley and invited Robert Lewandowski to score the third headed goal on the night.

36th minute: Müller from distance

Four up after the half-hour: Müller and Thiago had reason to celebrate.

FCB enjoyed a purple patch, soon adding a fourth goal. Thiago teed up Müller in midfield, who just let fly after a few steps. The ball took a deflection and left Porto keeper Fabiano Freitas powerless.

40th minute: involved in three goals

Lewandowski struck ruthlessly: Müller's second assist on the night.

It just went on and on. Again, Müller was involved. He got hold of the ball at the edge of the box following a stray pass, controlled it perfectly and set up Lewandowski in the centre. The striker sidestepped his markers and crashed home clinically. It was Bayern's fifth goal in the first half!

88th minute: the icing on the cake

The right answer to the foul against Thiago: Alonso's free-kick made it 6-1.

Jackson Martínez scored a consolation goal for Porto with 20 minutes to go, the away side looking to bounce back, but Bayern had the last word. Iván Marcano saw the yellow-red card for a heavy challenge against Thiago, Xabi Alonso stepping up to take the ensuing free-kick. The Spanish maestro curled the ball over the ball and into the net from 25 yards, sealing the final 6-1 scoreline.

Final whistle: time to celebrate

The Bayern fans and players had more than earned the party!

The home crowd and Bayern players celebrated a phenomenal display that sent them into the Champions League semi-finals. The fans' support had given the team the much-needed impetus after the defeat in the first leg. The players paid it back on an unforgettable night.
