Bayern vow to tame ravenous Wolves

Postby FCBayernNews » Fri Apr 03, 2009 6:45 pm

The wolf, according to the dictionary definition, is a breed of dog which lives and hunts in packs. The species was thought to have become extinct in Germany around a century ago, but wolf sightings were reported from the states of Hesse and Saxony-Anhalt in 2008. Some 50 or 60 of the beasts are currently thought to be resident in the Federal Republic.

A pack of dangerous Wolves has been roaming the Bundesliga to devastating effect of late. Former Bayern boss Felix Magath and his VfL Wolfsburg team have eagerly devoured a string of opponents and are now utterly realistic contenders to deprive Bayern of the title they claimed last season. On Saturday (Live in English from 3.15 pm on Web Radio) the Wolves entertain the champions at their very own "lair," the Volkswagen Arena.

Level in every respect

"A win in Wolfsburg would tip the scales in our favour, and a draw would still keep all our options open," commented Uli Hoeneß ahead of the meeting with Magath's men, who lie joint second with a record identical to the Bavarians' in every respect, and a point off leaders Hertha BSC. As the Bayern manager pointed out, the winners of the top-of-the-table showdown are sure to remain right in the thick of the title race, but the losers will suddenly find themselves playing an awkward game of catch-up.

The trip to Wolfsburg heralds the start of the make-or-break phase of the campaign for Munich. "We have to prove ourselves in the next few games. The whole of 2009 will be remembered for what happens in the next few weeks, by every player and the whole club. We must be very conscious of this truth," Jürgen Klinsmann exclusively told

Four days after the crucial top flight meeting with Wolfsburg, Bayern travel to Barcelona for the Champions League quarter-final first leg. However, Klinsmann has banned his players from even thinking about the European glamour tie. Instead, the coach has urged total concentration on Saturday.

"Concentration is the most important thing at this stage," veteran campaigner Zé Roberto agreed. "Wolfsburg is the main concern, it's a vital and decisive match," the midfielder said. "Wolfsburg has absolute priority. We won't worry about Barcelona until afterwards," keeper Michael Rensing declared.

Best at home v best away

Just like Barcelona, Wolfsburg boast a prolific attacking unit with Grafite, Edin Dzeko and Ex-FCB man "Zwetschge" Misimovic. The trio are responsible for 37 of their team's 53 goals so far, and Misimovic is top of the provider charts with 14 assists. However, Wolfsburg are not short of quality elsewhere on the pitch either. "We'll be pushed to the limit in Wolfsburg. They're a very good team," Klinsmann warned.

VfL are also the Bundesliga's form team right now with a seven-game winning streak. Magath's men have taken a league-best 34 points at home, and are undefeated at the VW Arena in 14 games. However, Bayern are the best away team in the section with 22 points on their travels so far. Fortunately for Klinsmann, Luca Toni reported fit during the week and is set to return from a five-week lay-off.

"Luca's presence is important for us. His return is a boost," Klinsmann remarked. However, Daniel van Buyten is away on compassionate leave and Martin Demichelis is suspended, so young Breno will start at centre-half. "We'll continue our vigorous pursuit of the championship shield. I'm expecting sacrifice and bite from all my players," Klinsmann demanded. He might also have said: Be hungry like the wolves!
