Bayern to take on Madrid giants

Bayern have been set a tough but not impossible task in taking on the nine times European champions Real Madrid in the draw for the Champions League first knockout round, made at midday on Friday at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.

The Reds have been spared the prospect of an early meeting with reigning champions Barcelona, who will play Liverpool after stuttering to second place in the group stage. Although Real Madrid could also only second place in their group after being soundly beaten in Lyon, the Spaniards look a more coherent and well-organised outfit this season under former Juventus coach Fabio Capello.

Bayern and Real are meeting in the first knock-out round of the Champions League for the second time in three years. In 2004 the Spaniards went through with a 1-0 victory at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium after beiung fortunate to leave Munich with a 1-1 draw.

Bayern will play the first leg in Madrid on Tuesday or Wednesday, 20 or 21 February, with the potentially decisive home leg at the Allianz Arena taking place on Tuesday or Wednesday, 6 or 7 March.
